Christmas Lunch - Do You HAVE to Have Turkey?
Ask a Question
Do you feel you HAVE to have turkey for Christmas dinner. If so - why? Tradition?
Do you even like turkey and if so do you eat it all year round anyway?
tumblespots We are ordering it from our local Fishmonger Johnny and cooking it ourselves.
I do not generally eat out so much these days as the dietary program that I am on can be a little restrictive - no dairy or gluten. Although I occasionally cheat. But not often. I take solace in my Green or Jasmine Tea!
Ceebers Dietary restrictions must be frustrating for you. I honestly thought you might have been going abroad (Bahamas/West indies) for the lobster. I hope you have a lovely and delicious lunch though wherever it is.
tumblespots I wish. I could do with some sunshine and a top up on the Vit D! We used to go overseas for Christmas a lot, but this will be only our second Christmas at the new place. Liking the solitude... Xx
Ceebers I know that feeling. It took us a looonnnggg time to move but now that we are out in the sticks we love the peace, hearing the owls at night and having a herd of cows in the field behind!
tumblespots We swapped the country to the edge of a town last year. We had a fabulous place, but we rattled about in it. It was completely amazing, but we took the decision to downsize.
Ceebers We had downsized too from a 5 bed dormer to a 2 bed bungalow. It's the best move for us and for the future.
tumblespots There were rooms in my last place I never went in. I miss the large garden, but then we have gained much more of a community feel and walking distance from a rail station too. Much better all round. Plus mortgage-free!
No, but I do like it and will have it for Christmas lunch. I will also have another joint, probably beef so everyone is satisfied and the yorkie lovers can indulge.
I would have a chicken (there is only the two of us now) but we still have yorkshires with it because, after all, it is christmas lunch. There is always far too much but we do like bubble & squeak the next day. I think a lot of families cook two different meats these days, I certainly know of it happening in many houses round here. Enjoy your Christmas lunch Lynibis
Itβs the only day of the year I do eat turkey as I really donβt like it.... but Iβve always had Christmas at other peopleβs houses so I go with whatever they want to eat...
I don't like Turkey either. I would eat the rest but kindly refuse the offer of turkey. I'm surprised by the number of people who eat things they don't like.
I would rather say that I don't like it in case they give it to me again another time. Enjoy your Christmas Dinner sarahgreen15
I don't cook Turkey. Some years we have chicken but now and again we have had a vegetarian Xmas dinner
KirstyWaddell Nutroast, make one, easy peasy or special it up with Marks and Spencers, I get two usually, yeah, they're pricey and small! I make one, and forget healthy, bacon fat and the works for this girl. x
Can't remember a Christmas without it, but we tend to also have gammon as well, and maybe even beef. So it wouldn't matter if we swapped it out completely one year!
I can't remember the last time it was served in our house. It is interesting to know who could/would do without and who would feel cheated if turkey wasn't on the menu.
tumblespots everyone has their own traditions, and some people like to mix things up each year. I don't think I could do something wildly different though like have a Chinese or an Indian - it needs to be somewhat traditional - an extra special roast dinner of some kind, or it wouldn't feel right.
MeestairChrees Funnily enough we were inbetween selling / buying houses last year and were in rented with limited kitchen equipment so I did curry but added sprouts to the sauce! It was great.
tumblespots if there was one thing I'd not add, it would be sprouts! I'm up for trying a turkey curry with pigs in blankets thrown in, maybe a cranberry dip with poppadoms... This I actually want to try now!
MeestairChrees It's to early in the morning to make it now, you will have to pop a note somewhere in the kitchen and make it later on...
We love sprouts!
I'm not a vegetarian but my sister is and she always gets a gorgeous nut roast, I always get extra in or request it from whoevers turn it is, otherwise I'll eat half her dinner! For some reason though I do want a slice of turkey on my plate, if it's going anyway, would have no problem with a change. It's my turn next year maybe I'll suggest we be brave, as long as my Dad still gets his brandy christmas pud set on fire, we should all be ok lol. Ceebers I've never tried Lobster, I'm not a big fan of anything that comes from the sea as a food generally, but I do think it looks really nice, that and fresh crab too, is it fishy what does the texture compare to?
I know Mr Tumblespots would prefer turkey but I find it dry, even though people have suggested to me to just get a crown and that that should be better/nicer, but I still get chicken instead as I don't want the dinner ruined by a 'bad bird'. Being meat eaters we have never had nut roast, in fact I don't believe we know anyone who is a vegetarian.
tumblespots I also never eat Nut Roast. But I do love fish so I will always choose something we do not normally have. Xx
Ceebers Funnily enough we eat a lot more fish these days too although in our case I think it is just because we are getting older!
I like having turkey as a family tradition but my husband doesn't like it so will do a small roast just for him and turkey leg for me !
We are the other way round, Mr Tumblespots loves turkey but I don't, we usually compromise by having chicken. Enjoy your Christmas turkey leg dinner MumOfThree
No, I don't have a traditional Christmas meal, but still want to make it a special occasion. I like to try different things each year and not be too gluttonous
tumblespots not at Christmas. I used to live on the coast and spent a lot of time on the beach.
