Christmas Nativity?

Ask a Question

Does anyone’s school still do the Nativity or have Christmas Choirs? I realised last week that my grandchildren don’t know any Christmas Carols.... I used to love listening to the school choir! Favourites are ... Oh little town of Bethlehem, Little Donkey, We three Kings!

Ann1984 such a shame, we used to love the nativity every year, it certainly got you in the Christmas spirit!

I am not quite sure why we celebrate an event that we know nothing about. If we want all the fun and joy of Christmas then surely it is not too much to expect to know what it is about.

Lynibis totally agree, my grandchildren don’t know what the Nativity is? Maybe that’s our fault too for not telling them the story, but you are right.... why celebrate when they don’t even know why we celebrate?..... my grandchildren think Christmas is just presents, they have no idea about the reason it came about..... and as a child, that’s how I personally learnt about it in Primary School... by being a part of the story every year....it really makes me sad. 😞xxxx

Imnotcheap so why celebrate Christmas, it is where Christianity began?

You don't have to believe in the faith if you don't want to but it does not harm children to know the Christmas story and why we celebrate it. Same with Easter, happy to have bank hols and choc but not even know why.

As adults we can make up our own minds. Anyway mustn't dwell as this is a religious topic not allowed on here.

Lynibis I believe it does harm them because I'm atheist and religion is just nonsense

I think faith based primary schools still have nativity plays and learn carols. Sadly, there probably won’t be any this year.

They usually do something at Christmas but won't be this year. Nothing religious though

There is nothing like a Nativity to promote good will in all who see it and you don't need to be religious to enjoy it either. It is just a wonderful celebration. It is sad that they aren't continuing with the tradition in schools across the United Kingdom. Once lost, I feel it is something that we will never get back and that would be such a shame.

Gosh, brings back the good old days of singing in the choir and performing at the church! Loved taking part, all the festivities!

I loved the nativity and Christmas carols at my old school. I used to take part every year. They did theatre Christmas plays too where actors from musicals performed for us

Hi all, I never meant for this to be a religious debate, I’m just talking about things we did at my time as a child that you don’t see anymore! Easter bonnet parade, local brass band walking up the street practicing for their next event.

You don’t have to believe in anything for that feel good factor.... we know Santa isn’t real, but I bet everyone LOVES Miracle On 34th Street..... it makes you feel good! The Nativity is a STORY, do we read stories about Unicorns to our Children? Why in this day and age, is everything a debate? ...... anything that makes you feel good.... surely the feeling is REAL! I love a real nativity. Not one involving spacemen or dinosaurs etc. I know the teachers at school get fed up of the same old thing year after year but to the little ones it's their first time. Traditional is best, who cares if there are 20 sheep or 20 stars.
