The City with No Homeless on Its Streets

News

It's so bitterly cold to even be walking around indoors at the moment, it could only be unbearable for those who rae braving it on the streets

Glad to know that there is somewhere in the world that's been tackling the issue of homelessness

this sounds fantastic and we should be more like this in the uk. it is terrible that we are one of the richest countries in the world and we can't help the homeless

I agree. They say there is a housing shortage issue, but living in London, I see so many unoccupied buildings - surely they can accommodate people? I mean a lot of shops have been abandoned as well as people cant afford the business rates, so surely they can be turned into living accommodation?

hspexy there's really no housing shortage. There's loads of vacant houses in stoke on trent boarded up that just need doing up. And there's thousands of chalets and caravans that sit vacant over winter. Not to mention the millions of empty hotel rooms. The government just has very little in place to help the homeless.

Tasha042 I agree. Even in an over populated city like London, there’s plenty of unoccupied properties, and then there’s those people with 2 or more properties, some of which belong to people who supposedly work for us in the Houses of Parliament. The benefits of running a country, I suppose? Tsk tsk

Yes I don't understand why they need a whole house that sits vacant when all other commuters get a hotel room... and then they charge bedroom tax to the working class when they have a whole spare house themself! 😆

yes certainly we could do a lot more. the government could provide help by prioritising these people for homes and helping with addictions and other issues. some people are just there because home is abusive therefore we should help protect such people

Turkey has a ton of empty houses they could allow homeless people to live in. It kinda looks like some money laundering gone wrong.

omg that's mad! cant believe they build such houses - looks like it's a set. What a waste if people are not using them

So many times I have given my opinion (and do not know if it is right or wrong) about the empty shops all over this country since we all went mad for online shopping. These buildings already have gas, electric, water etc and only slight modifications would be needed (maybe bricking up bigger windows) to make them liveable. Why can they not turn them into bedsits with a jack and jill bathroom per two bedsits and a communal lounge and kitchen area. It would not cost a fortune for the council to employ a housekeeper, warden and every day someone could attend to give advice about applying for benefits using the address and also help to find a job. I am sure that if a few good minds got together this problem could be solved and for relatively little money.

great idea - I can't imagine it costing much to sort out, as all workplaces need to pass all health and safety checks (if it's safe for people to spend 8-10 hours per day of their working lives, then surely it's sufficient for someone to rest for the night)

their government have been working hard at it, so they really wanted to make the change - so there is hope for us all!

Yes trying for decades, but at least they persisted. Always light at the end of the tunnel

This is a great idea! We need something like this to help the homeless but we also need the homeless to help themselves, the promise of a home should also come with the offer of a job and somehow get them out of the funk that they have found themselves in. Something to allow them to grow and develop and gain more skills too.

Yes indeed, they need just a helping hand to guide them, a little push in the right direction. We should never give up on trying at least

I totally agree and I totally agree that the government does nothing at all to help the homeless and we should not have food banks in a first world country. the government should be ashamed
