Where Collagen Supplements Derive from is Not Good
Ask a Question
Collagen is big business in the supplement and health industry , but do you know how they are made ?
Collagen supplements come from the boiled and processed skin, bones, and connective tissue of animals.
In China apparently they boil donkeys to produce it !!!
These are other places they come from
Animal Parts: Commercial powders and pills use cow hides (bovine), pig skin (porcine), fish scales and skins (marine), or chicken cartilage.
How it is processed
Factories boil these leftover slaughterhouse parts—hooves, hides, and bones—in high-heat water to extract the gelatin.
The next step is Hydrolysis Enzymes break that extracted gelatin down into tiny, digestible pieces called collagen peptides or hydrolyzed collagen.
Lastly Drying: Manufacturers filter, purify, and dry the liquid into the fine white powder found on store shelves
You can Get It Naturally
True dietary collagen exists only in animal tissues.
Bone Broth: Made by slow-simmering animal bones and connective tissue for hours.
Poultry Skin and Cartilage: Eating chicken wings, feet, or skin-on meat.
Fish with Skin: Eating salmon, mackerel, or sardines with the skin intact. Gelatin: Standard gelatin desserts or aspic
This would be my preference to the supplements
If you want to take the ethical approach you can get more collagen naturally, your body produces it from
Amino Acids (Building Blocks): Found in meat, fish, eggs, dairy, beans, lentils, and soy. Vitamin C: Essential for converting amino acids into stable collagen structures; found in citrus fruits, bell peppers, kiwi, and strawberries.
Zinc and Copper: Support protein synthesis; found in pumpkin seeds, cashews, nuts, and whole grains
So at a ''stretch'' you can keep your body supple and skin less wrinkly without the horrors involved with supplements
Does it put you off and make you want to go down the natural path ?

telmel Eweugh!! I'm definitely doing the aunaturale route, I'm embracing my laughter lines, definitely no botox for me or fake lashes, or eyebrows, or plumper lips ( ok l really meant trout pout ), l have trouble swallowing even the smallest pill let alone a donkey..how cruel & sad are the Chinese..I'll stick to my fruit, veg, nuts and pulses. Aging gracefully ((or disgracefully is my way forward.
Pinkspirit Sounds very sensible P, but i bet the celebrities will still use it despite how disgusting it is
telmel they have more money than sense & are just so ignorant when it comes to natural beauty...more about vanity for them.
Pinkspirit ,Same here Siobhàn, I don't want any of the latest fads in my life either...I'm growing old disgracefully.. I don't need collagen,I have my own thank you !
No falseness with me either, I have my hair cut & styled but there's NO big lips,NO spidery eye lashes, I'm a natural lady with very little makeup..
I do add organic grass fed beef bone broth to stews and hot pots as it is said to help heel leaky gut. I found it useful. I don't take any supplements.
Sherrifffroggy That sounds a healthy option S
I only take natural things like fresh ginger and cinnamon , which i sprinkle over banana
My white tea , which comes from the young tea buds is supposed to reduce wrinkles as well as having other additional qualities similar to green tea
telmel I have ginger and turmeric tea for my joints. Anti inflammatory. I think a lot of these supplements are snake oil. It's the latest trend. I remember when CBC oil was everywhere.
My diet has naturally been high collagen, so that’s been good enough - don’t need supplements that have been highly processed to get what I need. I just want to be healthy & content - don’t need to be chasing the newest fad
That's a big no from me, yuck! All you read about lately is how much we need collagen in our lives to make us look and feel healthier. I don't think we need it this way especially with what it's made of. I'm not a fan of knowing about what I eat or do thankfully I like to do it naturally and grow old without any help
.
My daughter doesn't do any of the fake spidery eye lashes or big lips either, she wears a bit of makeup & shapes & paints her own nails.
My only child looks like a teenager ,her Da & I were questioned on her age on the flight back from Belfast the other Friday because we were sat in the emergency exit ,even in Northern Ireland people couldn't believe she wasn't a teenager, she's 28 next month!!
I have been told that I have good collagen too, I'm 61
Yep, collagen is amino acids from animals bones ect...I'd rather get wrinkles than rub an old donkey around my face lol
