Compact dishwasher vs manually washing dishes

I'm thinking about buying a compact dishwasher (not enough space on the kitchen for a traditional dishwasher) to avoid manually washing the dishes and all and to make it cost-effective.
When you take into account the hot water used, sponge(s) and the washing up liquid likely costs a lot more than using a dishwasher machine to do the job.
Ultimately the best option seems to be that a dishwasher machine is the one to go for.

Love having a dishwasher. Don't know how I coped without it before with a large family. I always buy salt rinseaid from pound shop. Look out for tablets deals. Does save on water bills in the long run I think.
I've got a slimline energy rated A. Bought it using Quidco and buying from Tesco ended up costing me 67 quid after I got cash back and Clubcard points. I couldn't live without it. I'm always using about a billion pots when I cook!
The dog doubles up as a free waste disposal unit! 
I avoided having a dishwasher until the ripe 'older' age of 35 and I am not sure I would be without one now. Very efficient and gets the dishes super clean. You just need to shop around for the tablets. Or, sign up for lots of trials with brands. I think I have enough tablets to see me through to summer! Sites such as Valued Opinions, Ipso Mori and Pinecone research are great for trials.
I think, I am so used to hand washing that when I put them into the dishwasher they are already clean. Sometimes you need to pre wash the things....I would not get the compact one....but would change the kitchen to fit in the big one, because it can have a nice load...
we were given a compact one about 8 years ago, when it was already getting on a bit - but it has worked like a dream. You have to shop around but you can almost always get good deals on the main brands. Asda is pretty good when it comes to dishwasher tablet deals, Tesco less so.
I can't stand a pile up of dirty dishes - I wash as I go along, so it will never make sense for me to get a dishwasher

I had one but ended up selling it after 3 months I just couldn't get use to using it and actually missed washing them by hand.
strange as it sounds, I think I know what you mean! I'd miss it too, especially when you scrape off the tough bits! LOL
I had to ask the wife just so i could answer this question, she said she does not mind washing by hand but would love to have a day off once in a while, I said you can have as many days off as you wish, but remember that after a few days the pile becomes unsightly and still have to be washed when you get back.
