Contactless Card Limit Increase From £45 To £100 In The Budget

In the News

The chancellor Rishi Sunak is to announce in the budget today that the £45 contactless card limit will increase from £45 to £100. It was £30 before the Pandemic and was increased to £45 in April 2020 so more people could benefit with less contact from keypads and terminals

It will be law immediately but will take some tome to implement and to modify the equipment.

What do you think of this - will it help you?

I know my weekly shop is more than £45 so I think it will help a lot of people in that way?

I think this is a good idea for people who spend over that amount but for people like myself who would never spend that, i think the banks should offer us a option to set a limit on the card. Wont be hard for them to implement as most of us now use online or mobile banking so its just an extra option to add

neo1 I think that’s a very good idea. I never thought I’d use contactless but I do all the time now. Credit card limits are often too high too.

neo1 think that’s a brilliant idea as not everyone is happy to use contactless whereas someone like me I use it all the time.

About time 45 was a ridiculous amount I know it was to stop potentially people using stolen cards and limit how much would be used but if you were to use it many times then it does not prevent that.

Seems a bad idea to increase it that much means if you lose your card more can be spent with it.

Charmed1 my sentiments excactly !! A dishonest person could spend a bit before you would miss it. I had mine removed, just incase !

Stevo1283 As a nation we are being encouraged to stay at home so if you had your card stolen and didn't realise until you left home again, say a week later, an awful lot of money could have been taken from your bank account without you being aware of it. You can only take swift action when you know that the card is missing..

Not so good if you get your card stolen as the thief can then have a far wider range of outlets to use it even if this spending is covered by insurance.

I agree it is so easy to enter your pin code if It gets stolen then 100 Pounds will be gone

I do agree with you to a certain extent. I imagine in the event some steals your card and spends your money you would at the ealiest opportunity report it to your bank and they would give you you money back to the amount of how much was taken.

Stevo1283 They do tend to give the money back but you're still aware that someone has just fraudulently received multiple lots of goods up to a £100 value - doesn't take long for a thief to run up a significant bill. I suppose the good news is that credit card companies do keep very careful watch on transactions and if you're not a regular shopper in Place A or a usual spender of more than £X on contactless, they stop the transaction to check it.

If this actually is to be announced in the budget I am rather surprised, the banks are not government owned and IMO should not be told what amounts to sanction on contactless debit card withdrawals After all they are usually liable when things go wrong.

I actually wonder if such a thing is a matter for the budget.

Not sure if its budget matter as such - but this is a change in the law to allow the increase so it is a government announcement rather than the banks. At the moment they are not allowed to go above the £45 limit

It’ll be good for most people who spend over £45 per transaction, such as in restaurants.

I have mixed emotions about this, it's a good idea to increase the amount but I'm concerned about what protection is in place of your card is lost and stolen.

I do like contactless for small purchases , I think £50 would have been a better "round number" . If you are making a larger purchase (say supermarket shop ) no effort to punch in your PIN once a week . That's good as if you don't use your PIN for weeks you could forget it when you do need it ATM for instance .

Of course you will be protected for theft etc by the bank but won't it make your wallet/hand bag and all they contain more of a target for thieves ? They might well get 4 or 5 "goes " with the card until asked to input the PIN .

I agree the increase will make life a bit easier for some, but it would be good if you could opt in for a lower limit if you wanted too.

Just imagine for a moment that you’re a pickpocket. Would you rather steal £100 cash out of someone’s pocket, or a contactless card with a £100 limit that you can use multiple times?

Tk3 So you spend less if you have to put your pin? What's the difference if you are already in front of the till or cashier?

I think people who use contactless tend to spend more without noticing it, and that the £100 limit is a way for the Government to exploit it.

I've found 4 cards over the last year lying outside supermarkets, and handed them into customer services, but I always wondered, if it was someone else who found them, would they be handed in or not, and if they actually got them back from the Supermarkets.

Thankfully, I've not lost mine, but the first place I'd check was the last place I'd used it.

I do really think this is a good idea however some people are saying what if a dishonest person uses your card they now have more of your money to spend without evening knowing your pin, All i say to that is, it is still fraud, i imagine most people check their bank statements often enough to see if there have been any transaction themselves or anyone who has access to their card did not do or authorize. I never use to check my bank statements until a few months ago when i noticed 2 strange payments that i didnt do. From then on i thorughly check all my bank statements whenever i receive them, I also check any payments on my card at the end of each week using my banking mobile app.

Cashless society here we come , another way of monitoring the populace . Every card transaction will be noted and those " above " will know if you aren't having your 5 a day !! Image

This will incentives criminals to steal cards, would prefer flexibility for individuals to increase limit on their card or not.

I would prefer if this was something you opted into rather than just a blanket increase. I have no problem using a keypad for larger payments. I believe this move will give more of an incentive for criminals to commit various forms of fraud, mug or pickpocket people.

I feel that this is another retrograde step towards a cashless society which in my opinion is a bad thing.

I'm not so sure this is a good thing, especially if your card is stolen, its will be easier to make bigger purchases without putting thought into it too.

I work in a supermarket & really hate card payments really wish most people new how to use them they think they can just wave the card at the machine for a second & walk off thinking they have paid prefer cash much quicker.
