Corfu - Have You Been?

Ask a Question

Hi all, I have a week's leave coming up and fancy relaxing on a Greek Island. Was looking at Corfu. If you have been, what did you like/not like about it? Thanks for the tips!

Many years ago - thoroughly enjoyed it though tbh I don't remember a great deal. Boat trip is a must - especially if you can find one of these little ones that do the swimming trips (I can't swim so chose to stay onboard and drink lots of ouzo while the others did - no great hardship!) The centre/old town is well worth doing. Food was reasonable, public transport links were good..... remember some similarities with Malta in terms of the ease of being a tourist. Hope you have a fab time. :-)

I went years ago, there's nothing wrong with the island, it's just that I didn't like the resort I was staying at. You can get loads of info on the resorts in TripAdvisor

I‘ve only been once and that was nearly 20 years ago - I remember it being beautiful and the people were welcoming and friendly, but I didn’t enjoy the food, and I got eaten badly by mosquitos. There wasn’t much going on in the island

Thanks! Good to know. We're going to relax so won't need much entertainment.

In the centre there is a cricket pitch, lovely little shops and tavernas and a horse drawn carriage ride is a tourist must.

thanks @Autielettie, I do not like horse drawn carriages though, so I'll pass on that!

I went a couple of years ago. There are good parts but you only find these if you hire a car. The main problem is Corfu has a huge mountain in the middle and everytime you go anywhere you go up the mountain and then down, takes ages to get anywhere as it is slow going. I stayed in a Villa right on a pebble beach, which was very quiet. If you go to Roda, it is sandy but very commercialised. Last year I went to Lefkas and I would 100% go back there. Kefalonia is another really pretty Island, more expensive, does have snakes and earth quakes but that’s all part of the adventure.

I'd love to go to Lefkas next time. I've just booked a small place on the east coast of Corfu, nice and quiet. If we get bored I'll rent a car for the day and go explore. thanks for your tips 🙂

I was there more than 10 years ago with my bf. We went with a travel agency what got bankrupt during our visit 😃 But luckily they flew us home at the end of the week. Paid for a greek night event to the travel agency which is not necessary, because every restaurant has some music and dancing and you only pay for your meal. We hired a small car for a couple of days, got our money stolen from the car during our 5-10 minutes stop. Never leave anything in the front of the car!!!

There are mosquitoes at night, take mosquito repellent spray or bracelets. Take suntan lotion, aloe vera and white hats to protect yourself from the sun. Also try all the greek foods like gyros with tzatziki, moussaka, lloukoumades, souvlaki, calamari, greek salad, olives, grilled fish.

Thanks very much! I will buy repellent, mostly for my husband as when we're on holiday he's the one attracting the mozzies 🙂
