Coucil Tax

In the News

I read a story in The Sun

TAX HIKES

Council tax set to soar by hundreds of pounds from next April to fund social care black hole

I'm Intreagued how much people pay for coucil tax. Some one compared their coucil tax in Wiltshire £300 is less than people pay in Mayfair London.

Are they all done on banding systems?

I'm a in Paignton Torbay and I pay £145. 75 pcm over 12 months. I live in a normal sized 3 bed house.

How much do you pay?

Council tax is ridiculous where I live, well over 2 k and the local council provide such a poor service. It should be part of income tax to cut administration and share the burden through the country. Not the deprived areas paying more than they can afford and wealth people paying a minimum.

We're paying about the same in a village in SW Wales where we have basically no amenities.

They do pick our rubbish up, I suppose (within reason).

We have recently moved to a new area and a much bigger house, so our council tax has changed, but we are paying the same amount as you.

I was a supporter of the poll tax where you paid per occupant. There’s only two of us but four adults live opposite.

I couldn't agree more Pjran, the community charge (perhaps wrongly labelled "poll tax") was much fairer even though I was better off when it was replaced with Council Tax*. I think the main problem was that some younger members of households were expected to cough up too. I now wonder if the protestors at each adult household member having to contribute, are thinking differently now the then younger members have flown the nest.

*Thought I'd explain why; at the time I was carer for someone terminally ill and wasn't required to pay council tax.

I preferred the old rates system which literally put the tax cleanly on the house value, yes unfair in many ways however it meant people maximised the use of homes by having the maximum number of occupants and meant having a second home was too expensive. This meant housing stock availability was good and home values were kept more suppressed meaning it was easier for a wider range of people to own their own homes. Of course it did mean the very rich living in very large homes had huge rates bills and of course that was why it was changed. However it still remains I feel the best way of collecting local tax. Houses can't move so it also had a very high collection rate. As soon as you move in you pay the tax. The rates system was by far the most environmentally friendly tax as it punished people who owned large sections of land and large homes. It motivated people to have smaller homes.

Pjran blame the left for that, common sense was never their strong point..

We pay just over £200 pcm for a 2 bed house in Greater London. Not sure what band we’re in but everyone says our council tax is sky high for the borough we live in.

In my opinion it shouldn't matter in which borough people live, the cost of collecting rubbish and other council services. can't vary too much from place to place, apparently the large differences are explained by the costs of looking after those who, perhaps because of age, need extra care. I think such things should be funded by general taxation. (not by government handouts to favoured places).

I find it amazing that the government seem to be increasing a lot of things, either immediately or in April next year, and all of them seem to be in the name of 'plugging the black hole'. Strange, isn't it.... be prepared for many more increases....

Everyone must have known things were going to go up if the government kept on borrowing it was going to effect everyone so much bills will go up to pay for some of the debt.

Without becoming political I think it should be remembered that there have been unprecedented extra costs since the first lockdown and that some of the extra costs have to be recuperated. I'm just grateful that some extra expenditure was allowed to happen.

Here's something you might not know. There was a little known rule which said if a council wanted to raise council tax by more than 1.99% they would have to have a referendum by there electorate to see if they could put it up.

A few years ago the rule got altered by thegovernment. If the council wanted to put up council tax they could by up to 5% but there was 2 rules 3% Had to go to social care as it was ringfenced and the other 2% towards local requirements. But they still if its above 5% you still get to vote yes or no.

I hate paying for Council Tax and here's why. I'll show you what it covers:

Source

  • Police? They're hopeless now. You can't rely on them if you're a victim of a crime.
  • Fire services? I tend to see them a lot going one or the other way, but I doubt there's actually any fires because there's never any news about it anywhere.
  • Libraries? Okay, I respect that. We need to preserve it.
  • Education? They're lacking nowadays.
  • Rubbish and waste collection? The garbage bins around here are full, and the streets are filthy.
  • Transport and road maintenance? Another point I agree with.
  • Environmental health? I just mentioned how they're not collecting trash or cleaning the streets, so they're just making stuff up.
  • Local elections? That's as useless as voting for a PM (oh wait, we don't actually get to do that!).

I canceled my TV License which I should have done years ago since I didn't actually watch Live TV or use BBC's iPlayer, but kept being told by people that I needed "because you own a TV." Wish I could cancel my Council Tax since most of it isn't actually done.

If the U.K, had a genuine conservative government they'd get rid of CT, TVL, and a bunch of other stuff that's just a waste of money.

It would be good to get rid of council tax, local Income tax would be a fairer way to pay for the services and easy to collect.

Where my mum lives, in a village in the middle of nowhere about 5 miles from the nearest town, they have just stopped the buses. A lot of the people in the village are elderly. Before they cut them down to 1 every 3 hours. How do they expect people to get to the doctors, its in the next village along, get shopping ect with no transport.

Our council tax is about £2500 per annum. We’ve noticed that the verges aren’t cut as often these days.

Unfortunatey many folks think everything comes for free ? It's all taxes at the end of the day ? However you brand it we have to pay for things , whether we use them or not . Certain things are devolved to the local level (Social services , refuse , local road maintenance etc ,etc ) . The idea being your vote in local elections gives you a say in such things ?

Such things have to be paid for , different councils get different levels of government grants (ie from all our tax money ,the government does not have any money of it's own ) .

The idea is that locals could vote to pay £10 a year extra to sweep the roads twice a month or £10 less to sweep them once a month. An oversimplification I know but you get the theory .

£175 a month for a small property in Devon. I know councils are stretched but its very frustrating when they barley manage to collect the recycling every two weeks.

Looks like it will jump up a bit to say the least after this new budget, I'm not surprised but another huge blow to living standards. Nothing in the budget to kerb imports and try to reduce our trading deficit. A lot could be achieved by increasing sales tax on more luxury items but nothing there, that would be a way of increasing taxation and revenue in a more focused way. Surely the whole point of Brexit was to re-balance our economy, its a two stage process, we leave and then we start dealing with the major issues of our economy. This second stage is taking a long time to kick in. Did they even have a gameplan after we left? I suspect they have probably done a deal with the EU not to increase sales tax, which would show how naïve our government is in negotiating such deals. Still I have to say compared to Liz Truss's first budget it seems incredibly competent and well thought out but that is comparing it to such a utterly incompetent budget.
