Couple Fined for Smoking in Their Hotel Room despite Being Non-Smokers

In the News

It is the norm nowadays for someone somewhere to try to extract money from you in the way of a fine

If its not for parking it could be for putting the wrong type of paper in the wrong bin, any excuse will do

Now hotels are getting in on the act

A couple spent three nights in a travelodge hotel and when they got home they had received a £150 fine from the hotel for smoking in the hotel room

The thing is neither smoked and the fine was for two days after they had left

The couple spent weeks trying to tell them this and in the end had to e mail the CEO to explain the mistake

He eventually admitted it was a mistake and offered them a full refund of £120

Did they get this ? , no, they only sent £80

The couple think hotels are trying this on with clients hoping they will just pay up

I know i would be giving this chain a miss if i was this couple

Not quite as bad but reminds me of a holiday we had in York. We stayed a week in a good hotel. When it came to checking out they tried to charge us for parking. I hadn’t even learned to drive at this point and definitely no licence and no car. We travelled by train and had tickets to prove so. They had to admit their mistake!

I give Travelodge a miss anyway ..

My youngest sister moved to Winsford & for her 40th she booked East Didsbury Travelodge for her siblings & our families coming over from Sheffield at £50 each..

My partner, young daughter & I were booked into a room that had FIRE DAMAGE above the heater & a URINE STAIN on our daughter 's pull out mattress!!

That was 15 years ago this coming March & my partner has NEVER booked with Travelodge since!

This is why I only stay in premier Inn, stayed in a Travelodge once, dirty rooms, dirty bedding and towels, rude staff, never again

telmel it was supposed to be for 3 nights, we left after 1 and went somewhere else, I can put up with most things I'm afraid from a snob, but I draw the line with dirty bedding 🤮

The annoying thing about this situation is even though they clearly didn’t do it, the company won’t accept that. I’ve had this problem myself where i know I didn’t do what a company said i did, but the onus was on me to prove i didn’t, rather than them to prove i did.

My Goddaughter had the same problem with being charged for smoking in her room when she was staying over for a wedding. She's a non-smoker as well and we ended up threatening legal action before they would agree they got the wrong room!

What a beautiful gift of a Litigation case for a Lawyer. I hope that this couple clean up.

Smoking and vaping is really getting on my nerves at the moment. I have never done either but I can not walk up my local high street without being hit by a cloud of smoke. Something needs to change.

I don't mind travel lodge though I'm not surprised at people breaking the no smoking rules.

I work in a school and parents show up and vape outside the classrooms it's disgusting and there's sign up saying not to vape
