Covid - What is so Difficult about Being Sensible ?

In the News

Its here for the foreseeable future lets just face the facts and mitigate it to the best of our ability-which we can !

Since March I have treated everyone (including myself ) as infected . Still been up the Pub and played golf (when it was allowed ) - No great problem .

Haven't felt the need to closely mix with hundreds of equally drunken strangers of a night after the pubs have shut.

Its not a silver bullet , but you can socialise at a metre or so (or could )- is that too difficult ? apparently it is for many.

If we can't use common sense and abide by simple guidelines we are going to kill each other (mainly our parents and grandparents ) ! Harsh I know but an indisputable fact .

Those of us who get infected don't have a flashing light on our heads , or even spots all over our bodies . We don't know if we have it but can pass it on without realising we even have it .

OK -Yawn ! Boring etc - ignore the possibility you have it - who knows ? .

Just be a bit careful and many thousands of lives may be saved - Think about it - it isn't hard and just think of all the pluses against the obvious minuses just for being a bit sensible .

Sadly people have given up and think they special that this virus won't attack them. People could help by staying at home if can't wear a mask because half of them don't know how to instead of making your partner drag your 6 kids to supermarket the other half keep them at home yes this happens then have a cheek to hob people back if brought the subject up. Am for one happy staying at home and avoiding the idiots. We'll have no choice from Friday

Agree , maybe its too late for those in high infection areas ? but its not difficult to stick by the guidance -is it ? Its obvious to most but with the exponential rise in infections it only takes one or two idiots !

My annoyance is that the politicians (of all hues) tell us how well we are doing ,making sacrifices etc when we all know many of us aren't !

Its a politician thing ,I know , they always have to compliment the electorate (to get re-elected ) and daren't tell us that in general we are irresponsible , uncaring folk .

We have to rely on each other to be sensible as we have far to many Covidiots in our midst !

Golfforall well Wales can only see from Friday if lockdown going to work but I doubt it very much.

Britain should work together and not against each other.

Ann1984 I know I bang on about this , which sadly bores most folks , but if just 2 or 3 folk actually take it seriously it could save 30 -40 infections and maybe 3 or 4 deaths .

My point is that its not difficult to be careful - not even inconvenient , not a blame game (although we all watch the news !) Sorry politicians many of us are NOT obeying the rules ,personally I'd prefer it if you told us so .

Ann1984 Me too , Of course we are all to blame . but you don't see crowds of wrinklies hugging each other on a nightly basis .

In a way I don't blame them children's brains in almost adult bodies free (for the first time ) of parental and school discipline . But they are (supposedly ) the most intelligent of their generation ? I suppose intelligence doesn't always come with common sense .

Its not political for me , its just a question of using common sense surely ? I'm a big enough boy to realise I'll be safer if I keep a couple of metres distance from everyone else in whatever situation . Done that for the last 7 months . To me its not Rocket Science ?

Golfforall I'm not talking just about politics. People disagree on most things. We've already seen a lot of protests from those opposed to the wearing of masks and other restrictions. Many view it as an infringement of civil liberties. They are not going to agree with you.

I still do things as normal but with precautions . Go shopping ,go to my Pub , my golf club , go to work etc . For me it hasn't been difficult to live an almost normal life .

I have been critical of the younger generation on here ,which certain members don't accept (that's the problem !) but the youngsters I play golf with and drink with down the Pub are even more critical of their generation than me !

Yes I get it , was covered on the radio last night . If anything is recommended , suggested by a body seen as in authority some will automatically go against it "as they know better" .

I think we always encouraged the youngsters to be "free thinkers" in the past and it didn't do too much damage while they went through that stage, made their mistakes and came out the other end much wiser after recognising their errors ,as we all did .

Sadly in this COVID era many will have to live with the fact they have contributed to many extra infections and deaths by their "free thinking " That will be a huge cross to bear for many once they mature and take account of their flawed views ,

Golfforall Another great idea was to send them all back to college/uni. Everyone knew what was going to happen, and it did.

The only way that they are going to understand is when one of their family members dies.

Harsh, but true.

I will tell you what is so difficult about being sensible. The world is made up of a huge variety of people. Some are stupid, some lack common sense, some are mentally ill, some are immature, some are arrogant, some are intelligent, some are unable to understand the easiest of instructions.....and that is just scratching the surface. When there are folk who think a viking invader is Christopher Columbus, or our Queen is Elizabeth the third, when a woman thinks she is in a sexual relationship with a ghost but has ditched him because he has started taking drugs, is it any wonder that we cannot agree, pull together or even understand Covid?

Not everyone has the ability to think clearly, understand instructions, even believe that there is a pandemic, then what hope is there of even starting to deal with it?

If you read my topic about 'my job is harming me' you can see why this virus will continue to spread until it eventually burns out, we develop a working vaccine (but then viruses by their nature are prone to mutate) or kills us all. You can bring in all the rules, laws and regulations you like but when those in authority can choose to ignore them at will and others decide they are above obeying, we are at their mercy.

I had to load 6 six young adults into a small mini bus, squashed in like sardines with only me and the driver wearing a mask. They are mentally and physically disabled so I had them trying to kiss me, dribbling, had to physically help them step into the bus and strap them in. They then go into school and mix with others and teachers etc. The parents are only too willing to close the door in our face as soon as we collect their offspring when it should be them helping them on to the vehicle and strapping them in.....but what can you do.

And that is just one small example in a world full of exceptions, disobedience and downright stupidity. In my humble opinion these people should not even be going to school during this pandemic as they do not learn anything useful and will never be able to live independent lives.....so why risk others?

Influencer Dmitriy Stuzhuk dies from COVID-19 after denying its existence.

This is a headline I just read and illustrates my point clearly. How can anyone be stupid enough to think this disease does not exist, but many do. The whole world governments cannot agree on anything except how to dupe the people into believing there is a pandemic?......yeh right.

Very often I find it’s the people who think that they are being sensible about COVID, that actually aren’t doing enough themselves to stop the spread. Whilst at the same time being happy to criticise the young and everyone else.

With a bit more care, planning and thought, most people could dramatically reduce their exposure to other people, and vice-versa.

Most people are extremely poor at keeping contact with other people to a minimum in terms of

a) Duration

b) Frequency

c) Distance

And equally poor at keeping their hands clean.

Here’s just a few examples:

  • One cannot realistically go to the pub or a restaurant with your friends and stay two metres away from them whilst sitting at the same table. Even one metre is very difficult. And of course you will touch the same glass as the person pouring your pint, or making your G&T.
  • People buy products in the supermarket they could easily get delivered (and/or buy in bulk) thus spending much more time than they actually need to in the supermarket
  • People go to more than one supermarket on the same day - not necessary.
  • People go to the supermarket more than once a fortnight – not necessary.
  • People go shopping with their partner – not necessary.
  • People take items off the shelf in the supermarket and then put it back on the shelf. Don't touch it until you are sure you are going to buy it.
  • People go to their local convenience store several times a week, for a newspaper, bread, milk, cigarettes, alcohol etc. Convenient yes. Necessary no.
  • People touch the door handles on the way into and especially out of toilets in the pubs, and touch the door handles when they exit shops. But they consistently fail to disinfect their hands immediately afterwards. It is best to treat every single door handle you touch as though it were infected.
  • Recently I watched a tennis player put a tennis ball in the same shorts pocket as his (dirty) handkerchief, and then moments later serve with it. Ooops!

Can any of us honestly say we don't do any of this? Very few I think!

If we all focussed a bit more on our actions - what we are doing, that we actually need not do - it would make an enormous difference.

I totally agree with you Johnny, if proximity to others was kept to the absolute necessary minimum; that would be "common sense".

Don't those who think it OK to visit pubs etc. realise that the people they're coming into close proximity to are of a like mind, it only takes one to be asymptomatic, and it doesn't take long for many of the others to be passing on the virus to countless others.

One thing I can't understand is why the "duration of contact" is considered a factor in assessing the risk, as far as I know it takes as little as a second for an airborne virus to be transmitted to another person, I wonder who has decided otherwise?😀

It's not even about common sense any more it is just people being plain selfish they don't care who they hurt or make sick and I'm really at a loss about how to get trough to them had a argument with a guy in a shop the staff wanted him to wear a mask he refused I had to steep in because he was getting aggressive then he tried to tell me there is no virus it is all a conspiracy.

And if we all stayed at home what would happen to the economy ? How many of the remaining jobs would last ?

An admirable thought but I don't think you have thought it through. That's why being the government is no easy job at this time .

Don't lock down tight enough and the virus will run unchecked and more folks will die . Lock down too much and millions more jobs will be lost and our economy will be even more ruined than it is now - then how do we pay for the NHS and income support etc ?

Not easy decisions to make , whatever is decided it'll be wrong in many peoples eyes

I'm glad I don't have to make those decisions !

Personally unless its raining the masks aren't a problem (they can get heavy in rain then breathing bit harder). I get annoyed when people come up with excuses not to wear them especially because I'm in a very high risk area tier 3. Even here I keep seeing people not socially distancing. There has been a third case in my kids primary school. I got told the other day of a teenager having covid who stated in summer he could not get it.

Being sensible is not the problem, its other people being sensible that's the issue. We can try and try to make sure that we are careful everywhere we go but other people can pass the virus easily being far too careless. We have too many people that think the virus doesn't exist, too many people that wont follow the rules and too many people are far too relaxed.

We have families going shopping together when they should be shopping on there own.

We have too many people desperate to go to the pub ( One sad act protested saying "Take away our pubs take away our soul") and when it comes to 10pm, what happens is everyone is chucked out on the street.

We have too many people having raves and gatherings.

We have too many people wearing masks incorrectly and not observing the 2 metre rule.

We have too many people not waiting and becoming too selfish and impatient.

All of those are some of the reasons why the virus is spreading and spreading and its not just one age group its all ages that are causing the issues. So blaming one generation is wrong when everyone is contributing.

The people you should be blaming is the government as there are the ones who should be leading us in this pandemic instead on leading us to the job queue. If the government had of actually do what they should have with Cummings then they wouldn't have opened the door for people to do what they want.

They ask people to abide by the rules and close pubs at 10pm then the health secretary is having drinks after 10pm? and people are wondering why some aren't following rules?

They ask people to wear masks and wear them correctly yet the PM's own father doesn't wear a mask correctly and is caught THREE times! and some people are wondering why some aren't following the mask rules?

They ask people to stick to the rule of 6 and then Corbyn is having a dinner party for 7! and some people wonder why people have broke the rules.

The government should be setting the examples and ensure that people understand and know the consequences but they aint and letting it be a free for all.

I had covid early this year and ended up in hospital for 6 days on oxygen etc and then after healing and thinking I would be immune to it I was struck down again. This time instead of the long drawn out symptoms I went from feeling ill in the morning to not being able to breathe in the evening and was in hospital again. I'm still unsure what happened but it could have been my immune system is now setup to attack the virus very quickly but unfortunately being older this means I attack it with T cells (myeloid immune response) which attack the cells rather than create anti-bodies.

So my opinion has changed quite radically. I now realise I probably won't be safe until a vaccine is available as my body currently can only deal with covid in the more basic way. I still have never tested positive for covid and don't have covid antibodies but there is no doubt based on the damage to my lungs that it was covid the first time. The second hospital visit is more debatable, while it could be covid it could also have been another virus or bacterial infection that attacked my lungs as they may not have been fully healed. So like many I'm unsure of the situation. I've always had an aggressive immune system. In the past if I had a cold or flu my symptoms were quite extreme but they were often short-lived but while I had the symptoms I could hardly move and certainly couldn't work so a much stronger set of symptoms compared to most people who get a cold or flu. Covid is clearly worse again. I'm in the process of losing weight as being overweight definitely worsens the symptoms of covid hence why the UK has had one of the worst death rates in Europe at least for the larger nations as sadly we are one of the most obese nations in Europe.

I certainly don't want to go into hospital again. However unlike myself there are clearly many people who will have immunity to covid based on a younger immune system or simply the ability to generate their own anti-bodies to covid. Being overweight also has hormone effects on the body it is quite possible as I lose weight I could return to a normal immune response.

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/09/why-covid-19-more-deadly-people-obesity-even-if-theyre-young#:~:text=A%20constellation%20of%20physiological%20and,obesity%20may%20avoid%20medical%20care.

Ultimately the vulnerability of people to covid is extremely varied. Some will die quickly from it and others have complete immunity to any symptoms. Unfortunately we are not like Japan where people follow rules for the greater good, the UK is far more anarchic with a lot of extreme opinions and much more selfish people.

Its not people finding it difficult to be sensible, its people are selfish plain and simple. A client of mine their child thinks that things like COVID don't happen in villages????? Apart from my next door neighbours son and daughter both had it (both adult and live with their Mum), the man over the road had it and was taken to hospital because he was quite poorly. I told my husband this and he said "So when it gets to the top of the village it goes no further!" Sadly this mindset is common amongst a lot of people.
