Dad of Boy Sent Home from School for Having a Man Bun

In the News

Really I don't understand hair is not part for a uniform at the end of the day kids haven't been in school that long so what's the point in sending them home

I don’t see the problem with the man bun as if it was a girl they would not have sent her home, as long as they are learning and are wearing the correct uniform and they look tidy they should not be segregated for their hair . It’s all about getting a education not how you should have your hair

my daughter getting bugged by teachers at her school for having a wash in/wash out purple in her hair. she's 16. I said the same thing, "how does her hair impact her learning"??

Those who haven't read the article might not realise that it is a Jewish Grammar School, where for boys the wearing of a skull cap is compulsory and part of the uniform. The bun prevents the wearing of the cap or would look ridiculous if worn on top of the bun. IMO The boy's father has a choice: accept that exceptions can not be made to cater for unconventional hair styles or find another school where it is acceptable.

Going back our was strict with how you wore your hair. I think the schools do not like you to be different that’s why they have uniforms. So your hair is the one way you can express yourself.

It's amazing isn't it - how you are told you are an individual, as long as you conform to the norm!

Schools have standards regarding uniform but shouldn’t dictate hair. After all some girls have very unruly hair so should there be a rule to tie it back?

It prevents him from wearing the full uniform so I can see why the school have a problem with it. I'm not sure why they don't just cut his hair or find a school that doesn't have a cap as part of their uniform. It's not difficult really and I don't know why people are up in arms about it.

ClaireF1978 Why should he cut his hair?

I don't believe in faith schools anyway and they should be banned imo

TheChimp that's a different argument and I agree with you in that respect. In this case they chose to send him to a faith school and they would have known from the start that the cap was part of the uniform. The school gave him the option to wear the cap on top of the bun but they refused that too. The school's problem isn't with his hair, it's with him not wearing the full uniform.

I know that this article was about Jewish school etc., therefore, this may not be this same, however, I have been in this position too as my son had beloved his man ban but was forced by the school to cut it otherwise was spending his days in the punishment room instead of in a class room. I found their "power" very disturbing Image

I struggled with the headline and wondered why a Dad was sent home, classic example of copy and paste! The Dad did not get sent home.
