Does Anybody Know if Spalding Plant & Bulb Company Are Still Going?

Ask a Question

I've been searching for ages, I can find stuff about Bakker but not Spalding, I wanted a plant catalogue, can anybody suggest a similar one please? Thanks x

What do you think of this?

Although there doesn't seem to be a website their products are still sold on Amazon. (could be old stock?) Perhaps you could enquire on the Spalding Auction site. It does look as though they have dropped part of their business and concentrated this side of things. http://spaldingauction.co.uk/bulbs/

I've just had a reply from Mike at the auction link you gave me ange, I thought you might be interested 'Spalding Plant and Bulb closed down last year and went into administration. The business premises are just up the road from us and have now been sold to another business (not connected with plants or bulbs). We are a separate business altogether.'

So now we know! x

JoTarpley Thank you, Jo. I sent off for a couple of catalogues (Dobies) from your post - I usually use Thompson and Morgan. I could really do with some help on my toms atm so will see if there is any advice in the catalogues when they come.

JoTarpley Wow! your're the only person I know that has! I even put up a post but no comments. I've grown some heavy laden plants but the weather is letting me down. (have a look at the post) They aren't ripe and concerned that they will rot if indoors or on a windowsill. How hardy are they? Even asked local garden centre but not much helpful advice. Anything advice welcome.

JoTarpley Thanks for the info - The American ones certainly look like the Italian elongated variety but they have an abundance of heat, which we are sadly lacking. It looks like I will buying kilos of bananas very soon.....

JoTarpley Really appreciate your hard work. I have normally ripened the usual suspects in the airing cupboard and on window sills but this type have little water in them and nobody seems to know what to do if they don't ripen by mid August. Watch this space. 😂 🍌

JoTarpley That made me laugh. The toms are San Marzano and because they have grown so well I will be upset not to harvest so much as a hand full. Have a look at the pics - they are huge.

Now this, is a very interesting article on your San Marzano tomatoes, I know that because I have read this and many others tonight whilst fitting you in ROTFL I have tried my best but am now admitting defeat, it does mention ripening towards the end, so I will leave you with this and rest assured, if I am ever at a loose end or feel the urge to read about tomatoes I will message you straight away ROTFL x

JoTarpley OMW!!!! You are amazing - thank you so much for putting the time in to help. The article is just what I needed. I've not heard of putting them in a paper bag and they are not so delicate as other articles had me believing. It didn't help that the worker at a local garden centre practically told me I was a little ambitious. Thanks again.

😳 Awwww thank you for your kind words ange, if you found one single thing to help out of all that then it was worth it, I think you must have got quite frustrated with the lack of help out there! Keep me updated ok, I'm hoping for a happy ending or at least half a dozen ripe tomatoes lol x
