Drink Driving ... Lifetime Ban ? or Not

Other

If a person gets caught drink driving and gets banned and punished as well as a fine do u think if they reoffend they should be banned for life . I ruined my life getting in a car at 18 with a friends boyfriend and her and he was drunk but lied n said he hadnt had a drink ... he crashed we turned over 6 times n ended up on the roof . I was hanging unconcious from the seat belt and my friend had to get cut out the car .. he climbed outthe windscreen and left us .. this has left me with uncontrollable epilepsy

Sorry to hear that, surely there should be tougher laws over drink driving reoffenders and convicted

Hi Jo. I feel for you and very much agree that in circumstances like that the ban should be for life. At the very least 10 years even if no one is badly hurt because there is absolutely NO excuse for drunk driving. We constantly moan about gridlocked roads and the amount of cars on the roads these days so I think if they banned all drink drivers the roads would be safer and less congested.

I would go even further and limit the amount of cars per household and also raise the age of driving to 21 as I feel it is the only way to combat boy racers who cause so many accidents. Everyone saying Prince Philip should not drive anymore (and I do actually agree) but it has been proven that young men under 25 cause more deaths than those over 75.

What a horrific event for you. It never ceases to amaze me how others have the power to affect your life, often in a terrible way.

Without a doubt - banned for life. If I was in power for a day the ban would start from the first offence!! Anyone who was truly sorry wouldn't want to be in that position again and therefore wouldn't drive by choice. The problem is how to enforce it, you can't tell by looking at someone whether they are banned or not. If someone offers you a lift does anyone ever ask to see their driving licence? This is really a can of worms.... as I don't like the idea of having to pay to keep someone in prison just because they can't behave in a reasonable and rational way. I strongly object to my taxes keeping prisoners in luxury that I can't afford myself.

The sentence for drink driving needs to be a lot harsher. The sentence is ridiculous and far to lenient. Your friends boyfriend should have been arrested for drinking driving and for leaving you two.

Horrible thing to have gone through Jo.

I think for a 1st offence the penalty should increase from a 12 month ban to something like 3 or 4 years.

Get caught again and yes, lifeltime ban as well as a stint at her Majesty's pleasure.

What an awful experience for you! My husband was 2 when his dad was killed by a drunk driver. It devastated my mother in law and left her a widow and a single mother and my husband never got to know his father. I think in those circumstances and in yours then yes a lifetime ban should be implemented.

There is no excuse for drink driving.

I think something like 1st offence 5 year ban

2nd offence lifetime ban plus 5 year prison sentence

Driving whilst banned 5 year prison sentence
