Eating Egg Shells
Ask a Question
Although I’ve always known it’s a great source of calcium, I have never thought to eat it before
do you eat egg shells? if so, how do you prepare and eat it?
I’ve heard they are good to give to dogs can’t say I fancy eating them.. too crunchy for my liking same with most skins on fruits and veg, that’s where all the goodness is supposedly but dont fancy eating a kiwi skin...
I did not know that - not sure if I can get the dogs to eat it, unless it was well disguised. Haha no kiwi skin for me either lol
No....I would not eat them. And I think u need to powder them...
But I am sure there were a reason before we did not eat them. Maybe because the egg shell is not so clean and it can have some bacteria what can make us sick,
Yes you need to grind it down and can sprinkle it over other food, but it ought to be very clean. I have seen how eggs look in the shops sometimes, which does not make it appetising at all
Gave them to the dog broken up on her food as its good for her, never thought of eating it myself though
Lol that’s a good idea. I might try it with my cats. They currently happily lick egg shells, so it’s just taking the next step to get them more calcium
Best way to eat is to grind it up in a food processor and make it into a powder. I don't do this myself because I have a sensitivity towards it.
Thanks for the suggestion. I have just tried grinding them down and sprinkling on food, so definitely will try food processor next
Egg shells are often not clean, and whenever I've accidentally had bits in my eggs, it's not a pleasant experience to have them in your mouth! Weirdly crunchy in a bad way. No thanks!
Before you fry it or boil it, put it in a bowl and check to see if it's good to go. That's what I do.
That's rough. I'd never eat that and doubt our dog would either, he'd rather eat human food or meat.
Thanks, I must tell my son as he reckons he needs a calcium supplement. I’m not sure he’ll eat egg shells even though they’re a good source of it.
I think if he puts it in a blender with other fruit to make a shake or smoothie, it will be much more appealing. I feel like I’ve wasted so many eggshells in the past now
I have never thought about eating the egg shells before. I must admit, I don't really like the sound of it.
RegularComper90 There's a reason why you haven't heard of it before, because it's stupid.
Yes, it’s not something I had come across before. And I suppose if you’ve ever bought enough non organic eggs, the egg shells aren’t in the best condition to present themselves as edible
TheChimp You have just told me elsewhere that you were going to reply to all my postings that were nonsense, so I thought I would return the favour. It is not STUPID - it is more STUPID to state that a thing is STUPID without checking your facts. Egg shells are actually a valuable source of calcium. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/eggshells-benefits-and-risks
I used to take calcium tablets for a little while, but stopped doing so because they caused bad constipation. A few years ago I started eating more yoghurts and have gotten into the habit of eating one yoghurt a day, sometimes 2.
RegularComper90 I eat activia yoghurts, they are so fruity and nice and good for tummy. I think it is always better to take natural stuff than supplements but no way would I eat egg shells, they may tear intestinal lining if not ground to powder. Drink plenty of water every day, that stopped my constipation in its tracks, never a problem now........who knew.......no one told me I should be drinking plenty of fluid when I was young, we were very naive back then lol.
Lynibis I love Activia yoghurts, but they are expensive when not on special offer. Aldi do some pretty decent yoghurts which are good for the old belly. I stick to those unless Activia are on offer.
Never heard of it and it sounds gross, I'm sure there are better ways of getting calcium, maybe a supplement or drinking a glass of milk or my personal favourite cheese.
Yes, but the point behind it is for it not to be wasted, as people usually just discard them as waste. I’ve not committed to eating them myself, but since I started growing plants in the garden, I now use them in my soil
Hi hspexy I do not eat them. But i give them to the chickens in there food. It helps with there egg laying and harded the shell. Because when they been off laying there egg shell can be very soft. Hope you are keeping safe and well.
That’s what I’ve been doing. I wouldn’t want to waste them now that I know they’re so useful
Feeding chickens eggshells helps prevent egg eating by providing them with extra calcium, so they don't go looking for it on their own. https://www.fresheggsdaily.blog/2017/05/5-easy-steps-to-feeding-your-chickens.html
Gobbledygook. Dry and crush them and mix with grain or pellets, helps with digestion and egg shell production, works the same way as letting hens peck in grit or sharp sand.
i heard they are full of calcium. i personally couldnt bring myself to eat them! my dogs dont even find them interesting so mine end up in the bin lol
Lol I used to try to give them to the cats to lick out the insides. But yes, they are not interested in the shells either
I don't eat egg shells, and I am not interested in trying them, even if they do have health benefits!
I've never eaten shells. I always scrunch them up and put the shells on my plant pots outside to keep the slugs off.
Lol that’s what I started doing last year too, and I’ve read the calcium in the egg shells is good for the soil (when it eventually breaks down)
The only thing i do with egg shells is put them on soil around my plants outside to stop the snails eating my plants
What in the world why would you give em to ya dogs i defo wouldnt give to my pup i now when they have unset stomachs ya can give em raw eggs broken over biscuits if they ll eat if nlt just give em cooked egg this defo works but never heard of 1 humans nor 2 dogs eating the shell
Don't eat them but great on plants..Nutrition and slug deterrent..like walking on broken glass for them!
I do not like the sound of that, what has the farmer been doing to get poo on them, was he trying to hatch it.
