Eating Late at Night

Ask a Question

Do you eat quite late in the evening/at night? What do you eat? I try not to eat any later than 10pm although now and again, I might have a cheese and cracker snack if I’m up really, really late

I was always told you should leave around 4 hours between eating and going to bed.

If not, the body doesn't have time to convert the food to energy etc, which means there is more chance of weight gain.

Yes I’ve heard that too, but thankfully it doesn’t apply to everyone - I burn through calories very quickly, although I don’t like eating too close to bed time as I know that brushing your teeth soon after eating is damaging to the enamel

Every day I have a meal between 10Pm and 12am when husband finishes work from curry and rice cooked dinner not over weight 9st so the gaining weight I think is a myth

I think it is too, or rather something that applies to some but not everyone. It’s most likely down to your genetics and activity levels anyway

I didn't know about the 4 hour gap blacklabrador mentioned but that is interesting as I'm always struggling with weight. There's more to my weight than that but it's something to look at whilst looking at ways to eat better. Thank you for the question which gave me an answer to ponder over 🙂

You’re welcome. There is usually other dietitian advice with regards to the kinds of foods to eat after you wake up and foods to avoid before bed that is interesting too.

I went in for all that 'eat by 6pm rubbish' but found i spent the rest of the evening constantly snacking as I was not satisfied. I eat breakfast as late as possible (when I feel hungry) and eat only something small before having a main meal around 7.30 or later, I am then fine to bed time. I am overweight but as I have hypothyroidism I find it very hard to shift as my metabolism is so slow.

I get upset when people comment about being overweight because all my nearest and dearest have commented on how little I eat. Metabolism is like everything else in the human body, hair colour, tall/short, big/little feet, nose, ears etc Everyone is different.

Having said that some people are just plain greedy and live on junk.

I understand what you mean. I remember this lady I worked with who could never put on weight but ate everything that is supposedly not good for you - fizzy drinks, sweets, fried chicken and chips, and smoked like a chimney...and next to her sat another woman who was on a journey of weight loss and well being, surrounded by ’potions’ (different vitamins from Holland and Barrett!) and herbal teas, and she could never shed the weight. The conversations we had in the office were certainly interesting lol

Latest is between 9 and 10pm but depends on my day, i really try not to, as its usually something sweet. Sometimes I'll brush my teeth so then i won't snack
