Ebay Fees Are Back (But in a Vinted Way)

Other

As most people expected ebay fees are coming back but copied from the way that Vinted fees work so sellers sell at their price and buyers buy at their price which are two different prices because of buyer protection fees. I don't think this is a surprise. No fees was nice while it lasted.

Good while it lasted but no big expectations so no big surprises either.

MelissaLee1 I knew it was too good to be true with the free to sell. Basically just conned people on putting stuff on there. To then change it ! So frustrating when you try and do your best to reuse recycle and try and get a bit of money for your items. Just feel like it's not worth the hassle anymore 😪

The more annoying thing (for me) Is that you don't get your money from sales until after the item has been delivered.

blacklabrador Yes so everything has to be a tracked service now. No more first or second class postage plus if the courier doesn't mark something as delivered you have to investigate what is happening. Many less than honest customers are going to pretend items aren't delivered if not tracked correctly. So for more expensive items maybe we have to upgrade to a signed for service. It's adding a lot of additional costs to the sellers indirectly and no doubt commercial sellers will also be effected by this new buyer protection too. This could have a greater cost than the original fees with higher postage costs and more times you don't get paid for goods you have sent.

BonzoBanana This is exactly what I find off-putting about using Vinted, the fact that it's now coming to eBay is frustrating. I think I'll probably end up giving most stuff to the charity shop and only selling the odd item.

BonzoBanana That's the annoyance.

I always buy my postage through eBay, but if it's something similar to a large letter size I still tended to just drop it in a post box, now I guess every item will have to go through the Post Office.

Just had a quick look at my recently sold stuff, and 2 don't have the "delivered" green tick next to them - luckily I know they have been because both buyers have left feedback.

blacklabrador I always leave feedback quickly for items I've received that haven't tracked correctly for the seller's peace of mind. Of recent purchases, 2 are not tracked as delivered that I purchased but I have them. Even if you go through the post office, 2nd class doesn't really track at all and is not a tracked service and first class does show delivered at times but not all the time.

I’ve never sold anything on either but was considering it as need a huge clear out. Think much easier to put in charity bags that come though letterbox.

Interesting that the fees are back just in a new way. Will have to have a look at what difference this makes.

Haven't clicked the link so apologies if it is mentioned in there but when are the fees coming back? Does it say? I have only just started selling via eBay. Tried to sign up to Vinted but they blocked my account because at the final stage of signing up they asked me to slide a slider thing to drag a puzzle piece to the correct slot and I apparently done it too fast, it was right next to the starting point!

samanthadunn11 I think its February the 4th. I was having another think about this and realised before there was discount weekends where you would get 80% off fees and wonder if anything like that will come back? I guess auctions now start at whatever you start them at plus 75p plus to allow for the new fees. I will try to move as much selling activity off ebay now but for certain things it has to be ebay.

It still gonna be free to sell for private sellers (excluding vehicles), the difference is that buyer will have to buy an additional protection from just a quick read. Why bother with Ebay anyway, just buy from Amazon, track and buy when the cheapest.

examples of how it will work

Item price set by the seller

£20

Buyer Protection fee variable (4% of £20)

£0.80

Buyer Protection flat fee

£0.75

Price that buyer sees for the listing

£21.55 + postage

Item price set by the seller

£500

Buyer Protection fee variable (4% of £300, + 2% of £200)

£16.00

Buyer Protection flat fee

£0.75

Price that buyer sees for the listing

£516.75 + postage

SebK84 75p is quite high for small orders. If you sell something for £2 plus £3 postage it becomes £5.95 I guess. I mainly sell lower value items, my average price is probably around £15-20 I guess. Feels like overall ebay fees have increased from previously and postage costs will have to rise to make sure a tracked service is used. It's going to make ebay prices overall a lot less competitive I feel.

BonzoBananaFrom what I read is not worth to sell anything under £6.99 on ebay anymore.

SebK84 I think the issue is ebay pricing becomes a lot less competitive. Ebay's fees on top will mean something which I thought was fair priced now becomes expensive and the buyer will be put off. I either lower the price to compensate which obviously has an impact on how much I get or just accept a much lower rate of sales. This could have a huge effect on ebay's overall sales but they make much more money on reduced sales. However I think ultimately people will move more selling off ebay and probably use ebay a little less for buying too.

In a weird way it reminds me of the Labour budget. They said its not a tax on people but of course taxing companies means they have more costs which means ultimately tax payers pay more. Ebay claims this is a extra charge on buyers but of course it means sellers get less ultimately as they have to lower their prices to sell the same volume.

It's like most things companies push to the maximum margin they can get away with. The more people that stop or slow down selling on ebay and slow down buying from them the more they may re-consider these fees. Why German ebay still has no fees and had fees removed before us is probably a reflection of that market and how they won't pay those fees and perhaps have better alternatives to ebay in that market.

SebK84 when I search for stuff in Amazon I can never get it to list cheapest first then other brands appear and I give up with Amazon because I never know if I can get the same thing cheaper.

I don’t trust couriers/deliveries or buyers online. I will only sell local and cash on collection or I might deliver myself depending on circumstances.

JLouM There is no cash on collection anymore with ebay. People have to pay through ebay and then give the seller a code when they collect the item. Also reading online Germany has still has free ebay selling and they started free ebay selling before the UK too. So for some reason ebay Germany is much better value. It feels like ebay UK is by far the most expensive ebay on the planet now we are being completely ripped off.

BonzoBanana I don’t use eBay. I use olio, gumtree, Friday ad and nextdoor. Too many scammers on fb marketplace so don’t use it either.

JLouM I'm often selling niche retro computer stuff including magazines and has to be seen by a wider audience including abroad in order to sell them so has to be ebay. I utterly detest the company though but its a necessary evil in order to sell the items I have to sell.

So I'm guessing even more buyer protection and less seller, and you can't get money until item is delivered, no wonder sellers are leaving, I knew quite a few who sold and don't anymore

Best get as much as I can on eBay in January then! I also post on vinted and get a similar amount of sales on both.

liztuck If those items sell on February the 4th or later they will have these new fees added and you will have to wait for payment until after they have been delivered.

So am I thinking right, to confirm delivery to get paid you will need to send Everything tracked 🫤

I don’t know why they just couldn’t have left it like it was with the seller fees they were always running the 80% offer anyway and now they seem to be constantly messing about with it and having to use a tracked service for small stuff is ridiculous the minimum large letter price 48 hour tracked is now going to be £2.80 from Royal Mail

The only way they EBay will change this is if purchases go down and no doubt they will in pure number terms because of the small items.
