Ok I want to set up my daughters bedroom with a echo to control things like the lights , fire stick and smart plugs could someone tell me if I can just get a echo dot rather than the big echo and will any WiFi plugs/ bulbs work ? 
totally new to all of this so any advise would be great

Yes an echo dot will be fine, I have the large echo as my main one, then 2 echo dots in other rooms. Obviously the large echo has a lot better speaker for music etc, but the echo dots sound perfectly good and I wish I'd just got 3 of those.
As far as plugs/bulbs are concerned, most will state in their descriptions if they are echo compatible.
