End of the Line for Landlines?

Ask a Question

Just read an article that mentioned approx 40% of people no longer use their landline. I’m one of them. Don’t even have the landline plugged in any more.

Is it the end of the line for landline phones? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56831212

Are you the same? Or do you still use your landline?

I think I pay for line rental but I dont have a phone plugged in. Sometimez it works out cheaper to pay line rental than it does to jus to pay for WiFi. My nan doesn't use a mobile so just uses a land-line and I know her bills are around £60pm she could get a mobile contract alot cheaper but refuses. She's 85

She is probably worried about learning how to use a mobile. Maybe a family member could undertake to teach her. You could buy her a cheap phone just for calls and texts so she is not confused with apps, cameras etc.

However, if she can afford to waste £60 per month I suppose that is her prerogative. My mobile with virgin is £10 per month and I never use all my minutes or texts. She could be saving £600 per year!

MelanieMason there’s another company that I am with and my family and friends are with them to I got the over 60s plan for my dad and he only pays £30 a month for all his calls land line and internet and I only pay £36 for land line phone calls and fast fibre internet have a look and you might find her a better deal

tara73ziva she's very set In her ways she will only use BT she has unlimited calls fiber broadband (really dnt no why she needs it) and she adds on mobile calls. I've told her just to get a dongle for Internet that would save her nearly £30 but she refuses she only uses her laptop once of twice a month and it's only online shopping not streaming. She pays for WiFi but she really doesnt really need it. I've gave up trying to get her to save money

MelanieMason I think you have that the wrong way round - my findings are that it usually costs less for for broadband with landline, than it does for landline on its own. I know it sounds absurd.

I just checked - I could easily get slower broadband and landline rental with unlimited usage for under £18 a month. But trying to get landline without broadband costs much more. I've tried telling those who don't want or need broadband, that the broadband element of the deal can just not be used.

But I wouldn't even go for that deal - if I didn't need broadband I'd go for mobile with 1p a minute pay as you go charge. Minimum £30 a year. I can't believe that some people pay more than that £30 for landline and calls EVERY month.

MelanieMason I know it can be hard to get them to change they always want to stick with what they know. Neva mind it was worth a try

I think there will always be a landline for a while yet anyway. I haven’t used mine for calls. but most people still need a line for the internet.

Only 40% I thought it would have been higher. Mine would have been scrapped a while ago if it wasn't for the internet.

BT is moving to digital lines, and the others are likely to follow the same model (If they haven't already).

Basically, your line will be linked to your internet, and calls will be made via VoIP using your broadband and no longer an analogue line.

HappyTravels It is included on my package as usual. I don't think I'm paying extra for it. You connect this digital phone to your wifi, no cables.

We haven't had a landline for years and when we did I rarely answered because if someone wanted me they would ring my mobile

Imnotcheap yep we’re of the same opinion. If it’s someone who knows us, then they know exactly which number to call us on.

We use our landline as we have a plan which pays for all the calls we make on it. I wouldn't even know how to get our wi-fi connected without it?! Our mobile phones don't connect to the internet and the mobile signal around here is shocking anyway, we have such a hard time when we have to get OTP's - with my provider I usually get them the next day (when they aren't useful anymore)!

I have my landline plugged for emergencies only (live in a rural village and mobile signal can be terrible). Otherwise, don’t use it at all.

Use it everyday to connect to the internet.. seldom use it to make calls though.

I don't have a landline, but it would probably be a mistake to get rid of them completely. It's usually not a good idea to be reliant on one type of system, as problems can arise at any time. Plus, mobile coverage isn't great in many parts of the country.

My thoughts EXACTLY! It has got us out of a hole on a few occasions - good to hear someone else voice the same opinion.

We wouldn't be without our landline even tho it's only a back up ... we have used it a few times when the mobile signal has gone - at least with a landline you know it's there for emergencies. Also, when Orange decided to remove my number at least we had a back up for people until we could get sorted and notify everyone.
