The Escalating Costs of the XL Bully Ban

In the News

You would think that banning the ownership of the dangerous dog breed xl bully would be a straightforward and relatively simple

Not so, it is putting a big burden on the police force and escalating costs

Veterinary bills and kennelling is costing around £11 million per year , which they expect to rise to £25 million !!

Then there is the cost of the extra liaison officers, and their training to deal with them

Also the cost of euthanizing some of the dogs

Then the policing costs and overtime needed to deal with some cases

So an extremely complicated and expensive exercise all in all

Nope not at all I do believe any dog can be dangerous and it's down to the owner to make sure they have a muzzle on when outside fact is any dog can turn

Leannexxx Unfortunately L these breeds are fighting dogs and their instinct is to attack and maim unexpectedly .They have been cross bred for only that reason

Yes it is possible to have one from a pup and treat it with kindness and it may seem to be placid, but anything can set it off , and having them around children would be a massive irresponsibility

telmel any dog can be bred for fighting I know because my old dog was bred for fighting too turn out to a amazing dog great with kids but as any dog I wouldn't leave them on their own in the same room

Leannexxx These dogs are bred from pit bulls L, here´s the other dogs they use to create x bullys from with the pitbull

The staffordshire surprised me as they are the least aggressive from the list in my opinion

In the creation of the XL Bully, the other breeds crossed with the Pitbull are always large heavily muscled dogs like the American Bulldog, Olde English Bulldogge, Cane Corso and the American Staffordshire Bull Terrier. plus some large mastiff-type breeds.

telmel yes I agree but I've met some XL bullys and honestly they have been so soft it's unbelievable

Leannexxx I know L, they can be but itś the way they are unpredictable that is worrying, and the same goes for other domestic breeds as you said, you just need to use common sense i suppose

telmel exactly and that's why it's down to the owner some owners have done everything by the book and yet they are having their animal put down because of bad owners sorry I don't agree with it

Leannexxx agreed. It’s all down to the owners imo and how they train and treat them which is how the react

Leannexxx ofc it is up to the owner but sadly it’s not worth the risk. On the news they said 75% of deaths as a result of dog attacks were from XL bullys and 44% of all attacks.

jms19 yes I know but it shouldn't be that all of them get put down why coz they have crap owners there is loads of pet owners out there that do everything by the book and know full well of what one of them dogs can do so they make sure they are not left with children and locked away when they have people over

Leannexxx i know what you’re saying and do agree somewhat, however imo the figures are just too high to ignore. I’m not sure how they deal with XL bullys that people currently own, do they automatically put them to sleep?

jms19 well put it this way there was a puppy out near us because someone let it out of the owners garden on purpose and it was reported the owner was at work at the time so he didn't know by the time he found out the dog was put asleep that was within 2 hours he had a licence for it he followed everything he needed to do it wasn't his fault he was heartbroken and the police just apologized to him I believe they should have given it at least 24 hours before even thinking of putting it asleep

I appreciate the cost to implement this ban is expensive but it’s saving lives.

Pjran but it's always the dog that gets put down nothing much happens to the owners of the dogs that attack that's my issue this dogs don't have a chance because of these owners

Leannexxx I think the owners should foot the costs of all these expenses mentioned at the top of the post , especially if the dog has attacked someone

telmel the owners should have to pay and get jail time and not be allowed to own another animal for life

telmel now that’s a good idea and that would be the biggest incentive not to own one.

Controls for dog ownership need to be much more severe. Personally I don't think anyone with a criminal record should be allowed ownership of a dangerous dog breed and that includes any large heavy dog that has on occasion attacked humans especially children or babies. Also with regards animal cruelty, instead of a 1 year ban or 5 year ban it should go straight to a lifetime ban. You see far more cruelty to animals than animals attacking people and it seems obvious a lifetime ban is much more appropriate. I understand with regard farmers you may have to come up with something different. I especially like 2 stage fines. I.e. a £1000 fine for animal cruelty but a £20,000 fine if you re-offend for the same crime. We are seeing such a huge increase in crime nowadays because the punishment is not a deterrent.

If these dogs are so dangerous that they have been removed from the owners then surely they should just be put down.

Jane1000l4 Has to be pretty terrible to get a ban for life, I keep reading on people who have commited horrible cruelty to animals getting short bans. I would love to see more lifetime bans for sadistic people who abuse animals.

Such a waste. Doesn’t seem like the ban has been eventful. They’re lovely dogs. Shame about some of the owners…
