Have You Ever Experienced Disability Discrimination?

Ask a Question

Today I was parking the car and I have a blue badge . I have had 1 for about 9 years and today being no different I parked the car and had the usual shaking the head but today was slightly different in that the person actually said your not allowed to park there and I said why ? they said you need a blue badge and I then pulled it out of my magic hat along with my rabbit and they then said well your to young to have 1 .Have you ever experienced disability discrimination and if yes how did you deal with it ?

I’m sorry to hear you had to deal with that. I’m not sure if this is related however, my father is also disabled. I bought him a designer jacket for Christmas but due to lockdown he only wore it a couple of times, the zip snapped. I wouldn’t mind but it was well over £100 so we just wanted it replaced. He took it back to the shop and the owner started accusing him of breaking due to him being heaving handed and partially sighted from his condition and was adamant that it was my dads fault. This unfortunately didn’t end well in the end. But I’m also curious to see who else has experienced Such situations

I suspect the shop owner hates the idea of having customers as I am guessing you or your dad will not be shopping there again .

stuartsmith544 most definitely won’t be shopping there again, I actually went into store on my own and enquired about the jacket before my dad took it in, and the owner said he would try to fix it. When we went back he didn’t offer to fix it, it seemed he must have woken up and decided he wanted to pick a fight that day instead

Had it for decades.

It was from people in my hometown mainly and it normally ended up in having a ruck.

A lot older now (not so handy and a lot wiser), and don't really encounter anyone like that anymore (they wouldn't say anything to my face, anyway).

I could get a blue badge if I wanted, but there's more deserving people out there. It just takes me a bit longer to do stuff.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of stories of people illegally using blue badges, and I know some, so I can see why there's sometimes confrontation if the disability isn't obvious.

Yes I have, there are a lot of people that dont understand disabilities. Not all disabilities are visible. I started having siezures at 15 diagnosed as epileptic at 17. I have a disabled person bus pass and get told all the time im apparently not disabled, from people who clearly dont have common sense or a medical degree

Yeah, but it's okay as the disabilities aren't clear to see line a giant neon flashing sign. If people can't tell that a person is disabled then they aren't disabled just doing it for attention and sympathy. You gotta read between the lines and know just what to say. People don't like it when you aren't mirroring them. They think you are lazy if you don't have the spoons to keep up and they think you are making excuses when you say that you need painkillers and to lie down for the rest of the day (extended to a 2 day holiday) after pulling everything back into place that has slipped out . https://gfycat.com/lastpessimisticamericangoldfinch

Shame on that person! No one really knows how we’re coping/or not with our disabilities. You obviously looked good today. Stand proud, you wouldn’t have been awarded a Blue Badge unless you needed it.

I was verbally abused and told i deserved to be a f'ing cripple using walking sticks by a 'person' that was also abusing a member of staff in a supermarket. I went to security who said that they had banned them a number of times but head office had overturned the ban !! So i reported it to the Police who also said there was nothing they could do and just logged it and a disability hate crime. They want you to report but dont do anything about it 💩 😠

All that person should of said said when seeing the blue badge is sorry. But as they was caught out they come up with ‘your to young for that’. As they are not very clever. How can you be too young for being disabled?

Just remember that person is sad. Do what you’re entitled to. Ignore the haters.

I'm sure the mentality of some people is to be disabled, you have to crawl out of a car and drag yourself to a shop. The amount of people that cant understand some disabilities aren't visible is unbelievable.
