The False Widow Spider!

Ask a Question

Image

I normally like spiders, but when I noticed one scurry as I closed my door I immediately shuddered, which I never do. And then I looked it up online and I think it’s a false widow! I had to get the mean thing out ASAP as I definitely do not want it breeding indoors...

Have you seen them in your home?

THEY ARE HUGE AND SCARY OMG I AM SO SCARED OF THESE ONES!! Also, when I try to kill them by squishing them with tissue they dont even die straight away, they are so strong you have to squish them 3 or 4 times!!

Omg I guess they are quite sturdy, hardy creatures. We let our one go, and it was relatively cooperative, as it just played dead in the Tupperware box we had him in until he was released. But we are keeping our eyes peeled - we have never had them before, so it’s possible there’s a few of them about now 😥

No thank God I would have to sleep in my car. I'm scared of all spiders they make my skin crawl . You are very brave to get that out by yourself .

Lol I had help, but thankfully I know my home better than the spider, so he was trapped quite easily. And he was good as he seemed to coop. Some spiders just start shooting webbing at you when they’re caught, but this one just bundled itself up, like it’s bracing itself. They’re very useful creatures, and I’ve always admired them, but I did not want this one indoors with me

Certainly looks like it. 😮

It's those giant house spiders I fear the most. Won't be long now until they start coming indoors again for their mating season.

So glad I have my spider catcher. As an arachnophobe I find that to be quite a life saver.

Do the spider catchers work well?

Knowing my luck the spider would dodge the grabber part and run up the handle towards me.

blacklabrador Yes they do work well and are quite easy to use.

This is the one I use. https://www.amazon.co.uk/SODIAL-Hand-held-Insect-catching-Artifact/dp/B07GQ8VG2J/ref=sr_1_6?crid=162VIS2T8NIMQ&keywords=spider+catcher&qid=1565493905&s=outdoors&sprefix=spider+catche%2Caps%2C205&sr=1-6

You squeeze the handle which then opens up the bristles at the other end. They open up quite wide which makes it perfect for large spiders.

RegularComper90 Lovely, think I'll get one of those ordered before they all start coming in for autumn.

RegularComper90 Someone told me last year that strategically placed conkers were a good way to keep spiders out. Didn't work for me, plus the amount of time I spent chasing the dogs around when they decided it was time to play "chew the conkers", I decided I'd rather suffer the spiders.

I'm not particularly scared of seeing it but want to 'take it out' so that it won't be a health hazard for anyone.

Yes I was staying in some hotel accommodation once, kinda odd as it was in a separate building outside. Alarms at the local power station went off and woke me up. It was a hot summer night so I stood at the front door which looked out to the gardens outside. My hand was up against the door frame. I looked up to see right by my hand one of these big 'uns. I grabbed an ashtray and put it over it. It went mad inside. I then realised I was not in reach for a piece of paper to slide underneath....

Jeez just as well your instincts kicked in! Last thing I’d want to be faced with just as I woke up is one of these critters

We had a similar spider in the kitchen sink yesterday, about 3 inches diameter including the legs.

It's my job to deal with creepy crawlies. I just trap them using a (see-through) glass and slide a piece of card underneath, then release them outside. When we lived overseas I had to trap cobras (and a yellow banded krait that was in the downstairs toilet bowl), so spiders are easy! Never sat on the loo again without checking the bowl first though!
