Family Christmas Presents

Ask a Question

Does anyone need to seek approval from their family members before buying a Niece, Nephew, Grandaughter, Grandson a gift? In approval I mean need to show the parent the gift beforehand 🤔🙄

Ive done this before and it can be annoying, thats why I started putting money in a card instead. It is so much easier as kids are changing their minds all the time and might've wanted something else by Christmas.

A gift is a gift and as long as it is age appropriate, children, and their parents should be happy to get it. Not every gift needs to be something on their list, surely a surprise is nice? I really don't like the idea of children getting everything they ask for, it smacks of selfishness and a sense of entitlement.

We buy the Grandchildren what we can afford and always age related, whether they get used or not I've got no idea. My own kids get whatever, I never ask what they want, this year they are getting a box made up of freebies, wins and voucher purchases.

I've never had to do it and I don't expect my family members to ask me for approval before buying him something. My mum will sometimes send me a picture and tell me she is planning to buy it for my son but she is merely telling me in case he already has it. My best friend messaged me today to ask if my son would like something she had seen for him. She just wanted to know if he would like it so she wasn't wasting her money, but she certainly didn't need my approval. My mother in law just says I've sent a parcel for him, no approval needed. To me a gift is a gift and I'm grateful for anything that I get given, either for me or my son.

I think that to expect to vet presents is rather rude and totally opposed to the spirit of giving. I certainly wouldn’t agree to this Sammycb. It is very controlling behaviour. People should be happy to receive gifts without prior approval.

gerrykelly25 yes I totally agree with you, it's so uncalled for. My friends daughter in law is a bit of a nightmare. She was telling me she's got to send pics or links for the gifts she's thinking of buying beforehand, merely to get her approval as to whether she likes the idea or not. It's so rude 😠

Sammycb advise her to be confident in her own choices. It is not acceptable for anyone to dictate to another what to buy.

I always ask,but most of the time just putting money ,I think its easier and kids can go own to shop and choose something, or just put in money jar and save for something.

If someone was like this to me I would not seek approval and buy the noisiest annoying toy I could find and give that along a nice gift

I don't live near my family, so I always check with my sister to make sure she hasn't already bought it or the kid's are no longer into what they were before. I hate it when they say just give them £ is seems so impersonal, but as they get older it's easier because they normally want computer games which are more than my budget.

I don't have to ask my family before I buy my nieces and nephews things. I do sometimes ask my family if my nephews and nieces already have a present I wanted to buy them

No. I wouldn’t bother if that were the case. Would be better off just giving money

I think seeking approval is a little harsh...... my family liaise!

We only buy for the children in the family so if all of didn’t liaise, we would end up wasting money because the child has 3 of the same thing!

If I buy for my grandsons, I say to my daughter.... I am thinking of buying this for *child*, if she’s says .... oh *adult* has already bought that..... then I am grateful that I am not duplicating! Xxxxx
