What's a good breed for an older relative who is active but doesng want anything too crazy
Ive got 3 yorkshire terriers - their fab little dogs and their also hypoallergenic - im allergic to most dogs and cats. They dont malt either so wouldnt have hair everywhere to clean. Chihuahuas are super cute and Bichon Frise.
They're meant to be hypoallergenic but I'm still allergic to them unfortunately!
But I'd also second Yorkies. Small, so less hard work than bigger dogs. And they're cute, playful and loving dogs.
Saw a corgi with her elderly ‘ hooman‘ on the train the other day and I must say they’re an adorable breed - they’ve plenty of affection, have a decent amount of energy, but not too crazy as they’re weighed down like an anchor lol. I guess there’s a reason why the queen loves corgis
A golden retriever is a bigger dog but in my experience very gentle, caring, eager to please and protective. I fainted in the kitchen once and came too to find our retriever laid up against my back supporting me. My other 2 dogs were just running round like lunatics.
German Shepherd - most intelligent dogs you will ever have as a friend and keeps you safe if you are an auld yin!
Poodles are more intelligent than German Shepherds, are non-shedding and hypoallergenic,
and probably more suitable for the older generation.
The most intelligent dogs of all are Border Collies.
Johnny we have a border collie and a husky x malamute and couldn't agree more about collies intelligence. You definitely have to be on top of the training with a collie though or they will run rings round you and they have a strong herding instinct as my cats will confirm, they look at my collie like she's mad when she tries to herd them

Poodles lo, are you kidding there arent many poodle guide dogs or police dogs we shall have to differ on that one but yes i agree Collies are more intelligent but from the protection aspect German Shepherd is best even Hitler had one lol
garygemmell No not kidding. Poodles really are more intelligent than German Shepherds. My first job was at the Kennel Club. Hitler’s first dog came to him when he was in the trenches during World War 1. A small white Jack Russell terrier, belonging to an English soldier, was chasing a rat and inadvertently jumped in the trenches where Hitler was stationed. Hitler caught the terrier and made the dog his own. And so began his love of dogs.

PS. Had two Collies myself and numerous Samoyeds dogs are the best.
One German Shepherd - he used to go to the local newsagent with a home made rucksack to get my paper and with a list of shopping - best home shopper experience ever!!! I doubt a poodle could do it seriously German Shepherds are just so military in their obedience and loyalty - I doubt he ever even stopped to sniff a lampost he was out and straight back no dawdling - he knew what was at steak!.

Collie or Shetland sheepdog very timid dogs very intelligent, loyal and willing to please
Whippets. Often overlooked but are wonderful dogs. Lovely temperaments, very gentle dogs & extremely loving. As long as they are able to get a good run around during daily walks they are very relaxed & easy going dogs.
i want to say another dog name but I can’t 
ive always said khan terriers are perfect pets. my uncle had one at an old age and i remember her being so calm and chill, my one is just so sweet and good 
Bull dog. Very lazy at times so not fussed about missing a days walk, not fast or want long walks. They can get quite costly with vet bills but, what animal isnt. Just make sure you get a good insurance what ever dog you decide x
I've always preferred mongrels (cross breeds), they are usually more intelligent, healthier and generally live longer. For an older person I think the size is more important than the breed, my last dog was a cross breed, his mother was a black Labrador and his father a German shepherd that could jump over eight foot walls.
What about a Jack Russell?
They can be a bit naughty, but if they're trained properly from the start, they can be great companions.
I've had 2. The bitch was absolutely superb and was never on the lead, but the male we've got now can be a pain. Great guard dog and lets us know if anyone's coming, but loves barking at flies, so I'm not looking forward to the summer that much.
Check out your local shelter, they are brilliant for pairing dogs to suitable owners
I think definitely the best are Yorkshire terriers I have one of them or a German shepherd is great
