How Do You Feel about 'Covid Passports'?

In the News

It looks like the government will be introducing Covid passports to allow people to go to events.

BBC News - Covid passport trials to begin with live comedy night

I'm not too sure about this 🤔

Mass vaccination will halt the spread of the virus and I'd feel happier around people who have had the jab, but what if you can't have it on medical grounds?

What do you think?

I can smell lawsuit in the air or rebellion... They better reconsider because it can’t end well

I think other European countries will implement the passport system as a way of opening up the borders and allowing travel to resume, so the United Kingdom will have to adopt it if people want to go on holidays again! Perhaps a medical exemption could be issued to those who are unable to have the vaccine, and they could continue to provide evidence of a negative covid test instead.

gerrykelly25 I think that they will allow that scenario with medical exemption along with natural immunity i.e. if you've had Covid in the last 6 months

Creating more division amongst the public. They need to get the first and second doses to everyone who wants them first.

SilverSurfer Yep. Might cause me a small problem as I've had my 1st jab and will be having the 2nd soon, but MrsChimp hasn't been called at all yet.

So I'll get a 'passport' before MrsChimp which would mean that we still wouldn't be able to go to events together at first.

TheChimp I think it may be a while before they get a system in place, so Mrs Chimp might be good to go by then!

TheChimp Every week or 2 weeks it’s was announcing each age group for vaccines then just stopped at 50 and now it’s about vaccine passports. It’s going to cause loads of problems.

gerrykelly25 Hopefully but I can see a passport coming out before everyone has had the vaccine who wants it

I have always been the sort of person who obeys rules and if I can see no reason not to, I will do so. However, that does not mean I am a blind sheep following the flock into a situation where life, liberty and freedoms etc are at risk. I would not tolerate gestapo type interference in my life, with late night knocks at the door and being carted off for disobeying a rule. However, if the rule is in place for the common good I would definitely obey and if you choose not to then it is down to you if you cannot enjoy certain pleasures in life.

We already need to be vaccinated to visit some countries, we already have to have a travel passport so personally I can see no bad side to this, just protection from and for everyone.

We are going to need vaccine passports to travel to some countries anyway so if having them also means some events need them too then so be it. I will be fully vaccinated in two days time so i would feel safer around others who are too

Personally undecided and not sure about the whole situation surrounding these, apart from the obvious personal rights issues, what will such a scheme achieve as I believe , even with the vaccinations you are not totally immune you are still able to get Covid and spread Covid to others , so a piece of paper saying you've received the current vaccine is pretty meaningless really .

Mango4 Yes, but if everyone attending an event was vaccinated, the chance of getting Covid would be minimal and should stop superspreading.

Even if it's implemented news reports suggest it won't be ready for months. People would already have been mingling during the wait. It may be considered less important by the time you get one. Although, there is already a lot of resistance to COVID passports from MPs, businesses and others, so it may not happen.

I think it would make people feel safer and encourage people to have it

Not keen, but of I have to have one I will. If it means we can get back to some normality!

Those that are genuinely exempt will get some sort of passport proof I'd imagine.

Its quite a while off but I think eventually there will be some sort of scheme - certainly for leaving the country. As long as the people who cant have it for medical reasons can get some sort of 'pass' then I am fine with it. Eventually I can see some employers insisting on staff having the vaccine as well so the passports might be the way forward for them too.

I read yesterday that they could impose a covid passport to enable sporting venues to reopen. Whilst in theory this sounds reasonable, when you consider that under 50's haven't been vaccinated you have to ask who will be attending these sporting events. Can you imagine a football match, for example, with only people aged 50+ watching. They are shooting themselves in the foot with the covid passport aren't they, surely the majority of the active, and match attending, football supporters are under 50....

tumblespots I think that we have to look at this over a longer term.

Everyone should be vaccinated by around August which will allow them to have a passport.

TheChimp I'd be surprised if the general public really wanted covid passports. Also, what parts of general life will be affected, will you eventually need one just to go into a shop? And will you need to pay to get one? We need to consider the bigger picture as once the government starts something it can escalate...
