Film Adaptation

It depends how good the film is. A lot of folks don't read enough. Take Oliver, in the book Fagin goes to the gallows. In the film he's "Reviewing the situation" and everything is happy. People loved Fagin in the end so wouldn't want him dead on such a film...

Depends on the book. A lot of the time i prefer books especially the Narnia series. I enjoyed Narnia the lion, the witch and the wardrobe film they released in 2005/2006 though not the two other narnia films theyve done since.

I like Stanley Kubrick's adaptations of A Clockwork Orange and The Shining. The latter film deviates quite a lot from the Stephen King book, but it's still highly regarded amongst film fans. Although, Stephen King has been vocal in his dislike of the film.

I think it often depends on whether you see the film or read the book first. If you've seen the film first you then have a guide as to what the characters look like (so when you read the book you imagine them that way) if you've read the book first the film is spoiled (or not as good) because the characters don't match the way you've imagined them.

I absolutely love books, but I do enjoy watching the film adaptations. For example I read all the Harry Potter books when younger and have seen all the films. The films leave out important parts or change the story slightly to make it fit time constraints.

Take Lord of the Rings. Even if you watch the extended version, you still don't get the detail that you get from the book. Even with tv series such as The Last Kingdom, there are parts left out or changed to make it fit into the 1 hour show and you miss some of the little details that are sometimes needed.

I like both and do both but if I had to choose it would be books because the film is something really different to the original story in the book

If my daughter has read a book then watches the film she is a nightmare and brutally criticises it, we have now limited her to 5 criticisms per film

I usually enjoy the books more. I hate it when a film doesn't do a book justice & find it's usually the case. The time travellers wife was a good example. Brilliant book, film was a awful let down. I really enjoyed reading Dean Koontz Odd Thomas series, The film was pants tho. I also enjoyed Alex cross series (James Patterson) The Morgan Freeman adaptations were good but the later one (diff actor) was not so good. I love the Potter books & films tho. Also altho not a film, the recent Dark Materials adaptation on BBC was fantastic. I throughly enjoyed that so much I'm going to re read the series this year.

I don't read much these days, so film adaptations are quick ways to summarise the imagination captured in books that I don’t have time for. But when I used to read, I have found films were always a tad disappointing - the essence of a story is far richer in the written form

Normally I prefer the books except the Harry Potter ones. I read them when they came out, then watched the films and now I can’t read the books anymore.
