Fireworks

Did anyone see the fireworks in London either on t.v or actually live ? They were amazables . But tbh i think its a waste of money n can be spent on something more important then showing off n competing against the other countries

I didn't go to see the London New Years Fireworks this year, but I have in the past. It's very impressive, albeit fairly short in duration. You need to pay for a ticket to see the London fireworks within a large fenced zone by the Thames. This was set up a number of years ago to control the number of people watching the event, as there was a fear people would be hurt in a crush. There are approx 100,000 tickets costing £10, which always sell out in advance. This money is used towards the display costs. All the paying spectators and others in nearby hotels, on party boats, in The Shard, etc; plus those at free viewing points, such as Primrose Hill or Parliament Hill will be spending a lot of money before and after the event. This display will help generate more income to the London/UK economy than the actual cost of the event, while also promoting London/UK to the rest of the world 🎇

Hard to believe that people will pay £10 each to stand outside in the cold and watch fireworks.

I must admit that I grew up in an era of frugality and although I was never hungry (except after a day playing in the fresh air) I often went without the things my peers had. This made me very aware of money and how to spend it wisely and I hate to see waste of any kind. I am torn as I know we cannot stop all forms of enjoyment for the public but I also can't help thinking of how many homeless that money could cater for and give shelter. Obviously firework displays are not the only example of this.

Can't believe they charge to see the fireworks now. Didn't it used to be free?

They started charging for tickets in London in 2014 to limit the spectators to approx 100,000 people. The New Years Eve fireworks display a year earlier attracted around 500,000 people and there were increasing concerns about logistics and safety.

I agree I was thinking about the same thing, the money would have been better spent on British citizens instead! Fireworks are like throwing our money away!
