Fireworks and Scared Dogs

Ask a Question

I found out yesterday that the local fireworks display (it's a big 'un) has been cancelled due to Covid regulations. My first reaction was "Yay pups you don't have to be scared by fireworks this year" immediately followed by what should have been obvious to begin with "Sorry pups, but that means you're going to have to put up with them every night for 2 weeks"

I do like fireworks and I'm not one of these people who is going to start beating the ban all fireworks drum although I think it should just be one night and not weeks and weeks on end. I'm just wondering if there is anything I can use that will calm my Mrs pup because she hates them.

I did use the pooch & mutt calming treats which worked, but I haven't been able to find them since

You could try something like this ...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0038XA46Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_961uFb6RJ3MYE

but I doubt that it would help that much due to the shock value of the fireworks.

My woofer doesn't like any loud noises and just goes off his head and barks loudly. I don't think he's scared, just trying to protect us.

We have a houseful of absolute clowns just up the road who set fireworks off for at least a week before the 5th November. They really are a pain.

Anyway, I hope that you find something to help your doggos.

Thank you. We have 3 families that we live close to that are just the same also we're close to a playing field that teenagers are very much out of sight out of mind and have firework parties - got to love village life

rls Do your dogs mind loud music/TV?

Our old Jack didn't mind fireworks at all for most of her life, but got very scared towards the end. We used to close the curtains and keep the lights on so that she didn't see any flashes. Also used to play loud music or watch a film through the soundbar so she couldn't really hear the noise. Thankfully, we are in a detached house, so it didn't affect the neighbours.

TheChimp She doesn't like thunder, but generally tv doesn't bother her. Mr pup nothing bothers him, but he joins in for "fun"

I found the Adaptil plug in that The Chimp has provided a link for was really good at helping to sooth our pets.

The vet can also prescribe some very mild sedatives that help if your dog is really scared.

Not all dogs are scared of fireworks my dads got 2 and they fine as long as they are not right next to them but other than that no issues. Hopefully a vet can prescribe something or give you advice on how to help.

Our dog has had the sedatives and they helped a bit. This would be fine if fireworks only went off on Bonfire Night but as has been mentioned they can go on for weeks. We build a little 'den' with old blankets that he likes to cocoon himself in until all the noise is over. I've no experience of them but I believe these work for some too

I make sure I walk my dogs before it gets dark so there is no fireworks going off whilst on the walk, never leave them alone while fireworks are going off and always put TV and radio on to try to drown them out.. i’ve seen people suggest buying new toys and keeping them hidden until fireworks start and then giving them to the dog so they are distracted - think I might try that this year

My JR isn't fazed at all by fireworks thankfully, tho my brothers dog is very fearful of them. My bro bought the thundershirt for his boy a couple year ago & swears it helps ease anxiety/ fear this time of year.

I guess you already have the TV and radio going full on.... We used to use D.A.P. spray -it mimics the mother's pheremones -or something like that-wasn't cheap but it did seem to calm our collie in various stressful situations. Not a good time of year for nervous pets. Not heard of the calming treats!

My 2 Dogue de Bordeaux are not fully scared, but they don't really like the noise.

When we had Labradors they were terrified; we had a fortnight of shaking, panting and trying to hide.

I haven't got any dog but read this article on the RSPCA site https://www.rspca.org.uk/getinvolved/campaign/fireworks which includes details to ....

Take action to change firework regulations

In a recent poll, we found out that 85 percent think public firework displays should be licensed. This is just one of the regulation changes we're calling for. If you agree, take action by encouraging your local council to put forward changes.

There is a short form to complete your details to send an email off. I haven't completed it so don't know for sure, but they probably ask for your area to connect to your local council? 🐞
