If your a young driver who has recently passed their test the biggest thing to consider is the insurance cost.

Something like a Fiesta, Corsa, or Peugeot 206 to start off with, but double check the insurance cost before buying the car.

I agree with Mango4 Peugeot 206 is a great car for a new driver. Good size, handles well, cheaper insurance and if you get the 1.4 diesel version tax is only £30 a year.

Skoda Fabia / VW Polo or a Seat Arosa / VW Lupo. Both cheap to insure and economical, and will hold their value

VW/SEAT is definitely a great pick. They're essentially the same but SEAT is cheaper even though it's a VW.

A new car owner could start with something small and then gradually buy a bigger one if necessary.

Rockman from Fabia to Flabbier (I mean 'Roomster' lol)

Nissan Micra is super cheap to insure and very reliable. Also Kia Rio and Hyundai i10 especially if you can get either with some remaining warranty, 7 years on the Kia so I guess doable for a Rio which you might be able to pickup a 2014/5 model for your budget.

Nissan micra is a good choice. They tend to live longer than Ford etc

A Corsa, Ford Fiesta / Focus, Peugeot 206, VW golf or polo... I personally have had a ton of fiestas because they are the perfect size for me and i find they are really relible cars and cheap to fix 😌

Dont' forget the reliability index to check out the car you are interested in. It will give you non-biased data on actual faults and repair costs, its not a survey purely based on warranty claims. As ever the Japanese stuff tends to dominate the top reliability slots.

I think a Peugeot, or Corsa are usually the most popular choices and they seem to have pretty good safety rating too which is very important for a first car.
