Fish and Chips

Other

I hadn't had any since February/March, rock and chips £7.50 and I collected my meal myself. I haven't had any type of takeaway since then.

Recently I saw an email from Just Eat and was thrilled to see my local chippie now does takeaway. I was prepared to pay delivery and last night after a hard day and home late I ordered. Delivery was £2.50....fair enough, but the fish which was last time £5.70 and chips £1.80 were now £7.15 and £2.45!

To add insult to injury they then added a service charge (on the pay page) and it came to £12.90.

I appreciate we are in difficult times but that chippie is always busy when I go by and business does not seem to have been harmed during the pandemic. Sadly being charged nearly £13 for one portion of fish and chips has put me off buying from them again, even though it was 25 minutes late, but still hot and delicious.

I pay less than that for two portions & 2 sauces. My local has a 'phone your order through' policy. Ask for a time you want to collect it and he will try and accommodate you. I think we have only been moved by 10 minutes in the past. He has been open all through the pandemic but he blocks the doorway (you aren't allowed in). You queue, 2 metres apart and wear masks. It's a great system.

I feel for you because that is a ridiculous price to pay.

Yes, I just felt they were 'cashing in' during the pandemic as I truly don't believe their business has suffered in order to justify those prices.

I expected a reasonable delivery charge as I was too tired and lazy to go myself but I did wonder about the service charge. Surely they are just wrapping and handing to driver as they would have to me, so who is serving who?

Hate to see business doing this is it owned by a local

I believe so, it is not a franchise. I believe the original owners retired some years ago but I was pleased the new ones kept up the standard of the food.

If you had ordered through Just Eat the service charge would have been charged by them and i suspect your chippy would have charged extra to cover Just Eats costs that they have to pay. Its the same for Uber Eats. All these delivery companies are convenient but cost more, i only use them when there's a voucher about

Ah, I see, I hadn't considered the fee for Just Eat, but of course they have to make out of the transaction too.

If and when I succumb again I will go in person and see what the prices are in the shop compared to prices online.

Our chippy does a cheaper deal for lunchtime only and it’s more than double the price in the evening.

There are a couple of chippies in my area that I frequent. Both of them put up their prices when they reopened. It's not too bad for me, as I only buy chips. That first post lockdown bag tasted so good. I really had been craving them 🍟

Despite the price I have seldom enjoyed a meal more since lockdown!

I've noticed a few of my locals are more expensive on Just Eat. Our favourite has created their own website as well as advertising through the delivery sites and they are definitely cheaper going to their own page

I wonder why more do not do this rather than pay a third party like Just Eat and Uber Eats etc.

Lynibis I do too. I thought it might be easier for them to use just eat etc but if they have their own too that makes less sense. Maybe those sites offer a better ability to reach more people?

£13.00 is very expensive for fish and chips in the U.K. Can you not Phone your order through directly, pay in advance and then just pop in to collect it? Worth a try.

I will certainly do so next time, but you know what it is like when your tummy is rumbling and you have set your heart on something lol.

If you look at the delivery videos on youtube etc you see they get about £3-6 per delivery and often they have to wait for restaurants to get them the food, I would guess they make maybe £12 an hour on average but they are self-employed so they have to do their own tax and get no holidays etc plus run whatever vehicle they are using which can vary from a car to a bicycle. I wouldn't say they are ripping off customers and many who work in takeaways do not get great wages either. Many of these couriers seem to resent it when they don't get tips which personally I've never given for takeaways plus I exploit new customer discount codes often using the same code on 20 or so different email accounts. This would hopefully only effect companies like Just Eat rather than the takeaways or the couriers.

I actually had a tip waiting for the delivery guy. Sadly, he knocked and when I opened the door my food was on the doorstep and there was no sign of him.......good thing I heard the knock!

I wouldn't use Uber eats unless you have a voucher as they add on stupid charges.

Fish and chips. Yikes.

That and chicken shops in U.K. were two things I avoided like the plague.

I'd rather eat real food.

Your real food might be someone else's idea of a rubbish food though. A lot of the food around the world I could never eat and find very unappealing but I don't think that makes it bad food if millions of others enjoy it.

BonzoBanana my thoughts too. A lot of chippies cook fish (which is good for you) without batter now and an occasional portion of chips is ok. As I said in my OP I hadn't had fish and chips for about 7 months.

My usual fish meal is steamed salmon/trout with new potatoes, peas, sweetcorn, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, very healthy.

I love fish and chips, but sometime businesses over charge for the thing.

Do it yourself make it cheaper.
