Where Has All the Flour Gone?
Ask a Question
Prior to lockdown trying to get flour was hard now it's impossible. As someone who makes everything from scratch (bread, pasta, cakes etc) I'm finding this very difficult.
Don't even get me started on eggs!
This is so frustrating! I too use a lot of flour for cooking but I am struggling to get any now. I find it frustrating because people have hoarded it and I bet most won't even end up using it.
Strange that this is the new must have item, was in Asda Tuesday and they had stocks of virtually everything including what was the most sought after items Hand wash & Toilet rolls, but no flour on the shelves . Think everyone must at home be baking at the moment
We haven't had any trouble getting eggs or flour. We've been able to get them from our local corner shop or smaller supermarkets. I picked up our click and collect shopping yesterday and we got flour and eggs. I know that my Granny and mother in law have struggled to get eggs over in Northern Ireland. People are doing a lot more baking at the moment, especially parents with younger children.
I've been relatively lucky and have managed to find both flour and eggs in shops in my local area. This has been a problem for many though due to the increased demands. The main area of business for flour production is large food manufactures. It is easier to keep churning out the larger bags. I know some places supply these bags for home bakers, is that something you would consider?
This is an good article if you want to read more.

Good luck and enjoy your baking (Hopefully)
seasider71 I was going to look for that article as I read down the chat. The egg problem is a packing one, the eggs are leaving the farm as per normal on large trays then taking to a packing facility. Morrisons are putting large trays out and you pick your own into a box @20p/egg.
lilyflower That's not a bad idea from Morrissons. One of the many things that is coming out of this situation is that we are learning more about where our food is coming from and how it is produced.
I read a couple of weeks ago that the problem was with the packaging more than the production of the flour but your're right - eggs and flour have become the new toilet rolls. I haven't managed to get any within a delivery for five weeks and I''m using the pancake-day plain flour like a miser.
The saddest part is that the flour will not be used and it will be full of weevils then wasted. Everyone's turned into bakers..... crazy as there's plenty of bread on the shelves and one of the few things that gets cancelled in a delivery.
it's funny how you always need the things that seem to have disappeared - not been able to get hold of flour for weeks now, but no problem with eggs
the flour situation is better now, as I was able to get hold of some last week, and they seem to have more in stock in most stores this week
I have ordered of amazon £16 for 16kg free delivery , it’s a lot but that’s the only place I was able to get flour from after searching for a while , got gluten free the other day from Tesco but rather use strong white for rolls

I found this surprising too but I noticed it was out of stock the last couple of times I went to the supermarket before lockdown (along with toilet roll).
I can't get flour but have no trouble with eggs as we live in the country and have free range chicken farms nearby. I want some flour desperately though or this will be my last batch of cakes & scones!
Corner shop brought a boat load from Aldi for 45-50p wanted to charge me £2.29 for 1. I walked out swiftly!
Same here and there's not many shops where I live, and every time I've tried to order from Asda or Iceland, they've sold out. I've managed to find plain flour and a recipe to make scones with plain flour, so this'll have to do for now. If anyone has plain flour, you could add extra baking powder to it.
A lot of people aren't using flour for cooking with but to make salt dough ornaments with their children. The amount that are doing it I presume it was on the home schooling curriculum.
In my area people have managed to get some from bakerys
emmabeckz has posted this great deal for flour today: https://www.latestdeals.co.uk/deals/struggling-find-flour-pasta-rice-ppe-stock-alliance-online
Makes more sence to buy flour than loo rolls.why was so many people crazy about buying as many loo rolls as possible.you cannot eat or drink loo rolls.it would have made more sence to stock up with food and drinks
You can allways wash your backside.i was puzzled by it.
It was my sons 4th birthday during lockdown and I couldn't make him a cake till week after. Flour and eggs are real problem. I was hoping to start making my own bread again
The struggle for flour is real! Iv not needed flour during lockdown as still had a little in the cupboard, but it's my sons 18th birthday next week & I want to bake some cakes. Went into town today, couldn't get it anywhere. One lady in Home Bargains told me a local newsagent had some, rushed there to find they'd just sold out too. OH in the end managed to get me some from another local newsagents
Now I'm struggling to find caster sugar.
Plenty around now , you can get the 16kg bags from Amazon for about £16 and its coming back into the supermarkets again in the smaller bags .
Same problem as with other "imagined" shortages the intellectually challenged hoarders scooped up all the stock (thinking they were being clever !) along with bread, frozen food . loo rolls pasta etc .
Of course not thinking of the elderly and vulnerable who couldn't get their weekly bag of flour for their Yorkshire puds and cakes .
The big flour mills then prioritised bulk deliveries to the large bread producers (to keep bread on the shelves ) .
Now the hoarders have chucked out their rotten bread and have run out of credit on their cards there are no shortages - Of anything ! - There never was ! - Just the Distribution system couldn't keep up with the mindless idiots clearing the shelves of everything Facebook told them too !
If anyone lives near a Herons store try them, my local has loads in Plain and SR. Local Morrisons had a limited amount.
Not been able to find it no where for the past few weeks in Essex. Only have the 9KG bags, What am i going to do with that much Flour? Bake the whole street cakes?
Why not ? I'm sure they would appreciate the gesture and probably return the favour in kind .
I have loads of rhubarb and asparagus from my garden that I give away to neighbours .
Guess what was waiting on my doorstep tonight when I returned from my 12 hour shift …….. 4 Rhubarb Crumbles which I love but never have the time to make .
I’ve been asking this from the beginning of lockdown. What on earth are the hoarders doing with that much flour? None anywhere at all & fed up of looking & never finding
ivenailedit Go to your local Asda or Morissons bakery - they will bag it for you for 60p a kilo.
Plenty on Amazon - and have been for the last 3 weeks -£14.99 -£16.99 (free delivery ) for 16 kg - 16 kg is a lot of flour ! Too much for you ? Share it with friends , or swap some for a pack of Loo Rolls .
angemski great to know as will be going to both later this week & praying no queues
Golfforall thanks but have seen this advertised on either LD or another site, alas much too much for my household & too far to travel to share with loved ones. Loo rolls are no longer sacred
Dennab Morrisons it is then. Have you used their flour & might sound silly but is it same quality as Homepride & McDougall's?
Sorry no I've not used it. I read info about the types via a local newspaper so double check before you commit. This is flour they're using in their own bakery products so it must be fairly decent.
Dennab thanks so much & very true must be OK, as buy their bakery products & good. Very informative article & you were correct as lack of flour not the problem. Anyway, they've had more than long enough to sort it out
Beats me, but we make bread in an oven and it comes out beautiful. Sorta like if you'd buy it at a store.
Not my photo though it gives you an idea:
It's always a good idea to take out the ashes so they don't mix with the bread and get 'em dirty.
