Food Wastage. Buying Dilemma.

I hate food waste but if its going to be wasted its going to be the 43p lettuce.

I hate food wastage too. I always try to use everything that we buy and like you I hate paying extra for the pre packaged stuff. I would buy the 43p one and put the rest in the food waste caddy if you have one.

Go with the lettuce every time. The bag option never stays fresh enough, long enough and if one rogue leaf goes bad........ For this reason I always have a pack of flour tortillas (about 70p) in stock and make up quesadillas using shredded leftover lettuce.

You could always regrow the lettuce but I go with the aldi price match and kept wrapped will last at least 10 days

Can you not use the rest in sandwiches,just a thought,or even in a baguette with your usual filling,lettuce normally keeps fresh for a few days x

Oh just reread ;) if you are not going to eat it all then buy the more expensive one

TheChimp keep some of the iceberg lettuce leaves and you can cook larb gai or other type of asian mince recipe and wrap in the leaves. That's what i did last time I bought a full iceberg (to do homemade doner kebabs funnily enough)

In the case of half a leftover lettuce, I'd tend to stick it in my sandwiches for lunch to use it up.

I find it very hard to be bothered cooking just for me and even washing, spinning and chopping a lettuce does not appeal, so I generally opt for the prepared dearer bag, usually 'trio of leaves'.

Having said that I have a portion each day until it is gone as I also do not like food wastage.

I usually go for the cheaper option, but that’s mainly as it never goes to waste - even if it means I eat lettuce 3 days straight, I will do that

The pre packed bag is easier option....but. they do wash it with some chemicals to keep it fresh. So to me it never taste the same as fresh thing... I dont like food waste either. But if you know that you wont use it up you can put it on OLIO - it's a free sharing app. You can share food and non food items and someone will come and pick it up. During lockdown I shared plenty things on there- gardening stuff, books etc. You can also offer portions of your cooked food if you made too much... once I bought large bag of cereal, tried it and didnt like it all so instead of putting it in the bin etc I put it on OLIO and shortly someone came to pick it up

I would be buying the cheaper option and trying to use it up, although I have bought more expensive but smaller options before to avoid waste.. I have two dogs who love lettuce so I know they will always finish whatever we don’t.. it is ridiculous that supermarkets work this way though!

I would buy the whole one instead of the prepackaged as once it’s cut it does go brown at the edges. Carefully wrap the unused lettuce and it keeps for ages in the fridge,

With most things id get the bigger and freeze the rest but lettuce can't be frozen i dont like the pre- prepared stuff myself doesn't taste the same

I also would get the 43p lettuce but I think Sainsbury`s have a 75p bag which is a mix of carrots and lettuce and I prefer that one. I usually make mixed salad and we eat it till it finish.

I do have a lots of food waste. Kids do not eat everything..or they do not finish the food.

I use OLIO, an app where you can share food and items with people locally which would otherwise go to waste. Once I made too much cake - listed the rest on OLIO, and a lovely family came to collect it and enjoyed it more than I would have if I had tried to eat the rest myself!
