Make up Free Beauty Pageants

Ask a Question

I read that England recently made history by launching its first completely makeup-free beauty pageant, inspired by one young woman’s decision to compete without any makeup at all.

Definitely a step in the right direction (versus the other ones where it’s more about competition about who paid the most for surgeries !), even if these competitions are dated & probably shouldn’t happen anymore

Have you ever attended or competed in such competitions ? Is make-up free generally a good idea to promote & encourage body positivity ?

Here more of the article if you’re interested in how this came about:

Melisa Raouf hused to spend up to three hours doing her makeup just to feel confident. Then, at 20 years old, she became the first contestant in the pageant’s 94-year history to walk in front of the judges with a completely bare face.

She advanced all the way to the national finals, turning what could have been a personal confidence challenge into something much bigger.

Her decision went viral and helped challenge the idea that beauty competitions had to be built around heavy makeup, filters and polished perfection.

That moment later inspired England’s first makeup-free beauty pageant.

Melisa did not make an impact by changing how she looked.

She made one by showing up exactly as she was.

Honestly. I don’t think they should have them at all . Great no makeup but don’t like how it makes some women feel.

Think this is brilliant idea, we shouldn’t need beauty pageants to know we are all beautiful in our own unique way but if we did make up free and showing off our natural complexions and features is way forward

chele44 I agree. It’s so old fashioned to do them but at the same time, it’s a competition that I understand some people want to take part in (for whatever reason) so whilst it’s not going anywhere, at least promote natural, realistic looking people

I like the idea of this. I dont like pageant. I especially don't like them when it involves kids

I think one the one hand it's a good idea; on the other, I'm not keen on women competing against one another for who is the best looking. Me, personally, I need to have some foundation and concealer on when being seen by others as I look like an Egyptian mummy that has been uncovered without it. Image

Well I don't agree with kids doing them but if women want to do them it's their choice I wouldn't do them myself

To be honest I’m actually surprised it’s taken this long for a make up free beauty pageant to happen. I don’t think i’d ever attend any of them but all the participants enter willingly so as long as they are happy with it.

This is a great step forward, although I'd also like to see one about the beauty within and not what we look like. I don't agree with them especially for children. We shouldn't compare ourselves but this pushes us into believing we aren't as good as somebody else.

I don't like to compete against other women, I am self conscious, hardly use make up & when I do it's just face powder, lipstick blusher, sometimes I add eyeliner & my daughter will put me some eye shadow on...

I get told how good my skin is & people don't believe I'm 61,my daughter turned 28 last Wednesday & she has the skin of a teenager, everyone thinks she is around 18...

If we are going to have these kind of competitions, let's have some fresh faced ladies instead of the over made up ones that we see on our screens

I haven’t worn make up for years and in my mind don’t understand why you want to cover your face in products that can irritate your skin. Your skin needs to breathe and not be clogged up with different chemicals. I wish people could understand they look more beautiful being themselves and not pressured into having to look a certain way. So much better to be make up free for the planet, for their pocket and for themselves.
