Frightening Scam Call from HMRC
Other
I just answered a call from an 0300 number. Wouldn't normally but thought it may be a competition win! It was a recorded message saying something about a tax fraud being investigated and that I would be arrested shortly. It was a very posh plummy voice. I guess this is some sort of scam although I was not asked to do anything. I can't imagine that HMRC are in the habit of phoning and frightening old ladies with the threat of arrest without first telling them why or sending a letter or something. Anyone else had one of these calls?
This is the scam where they expect you to phone right back on a number they are manning. As we have all been told - do not ring back immediately and google a contact number of the company they claim to be. and if possible use a different phone. I know - egg sucking x. Still makes you worried though. I am ashamed to stay I put on my best pigeon English and pretend to be the maid and that I will be in a lot of trouble if they keep me on the phone any longer.
They will never call. If they want to arrest someone they just go to the place an arrest them. But very nasty scam!
Yes you are right. I wasn't fooled for one minute but it could have been nasty for a very old person unsure of what it was all about.
Lynibis there are so many calls, not even real ones. Some kind of computer message is on sometimes when I pick up the phone and I just put them down.
But lots of things are dangerous nowadays. Once I got an email looked like from PayPal, but it was a fake one.. I just realise after they got my details, so I runned to the bank, blocked my card and account.
Changed the password and reported it to PayPal.
Also my ebay account was hacked by some fake Chinese seller from America. They do that very often
I closed my eBay account because they could not protect my account. Was lucky, had no card details there.
Lol I have had to deal with HMRC for a number of years and it’s a miracle if they even pick the phone up when you try to call them, so the chances that they’d call you is zero. Definitely a scam, and definitely never the kind of thing the officials would try to do over the phone
Definitely a scam.....HMRC will only ever contact you via post, they don’t even email anyone so never respond to calls or emails no matter what they say....and you definitely won’t be arrested
