Scottish berry growers are looking to hire more than 3,000 fruit pickers to meet a shortfall in labour as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

I do hope the fruit doesn’t go to waste, as it’s always disheartening to hear about the fruit rotting away in farms - always sad to see people choose biscuits and cakes over fresh fruit

I wonder if they could allow members of the public to make separate appointments, to fulfil the social distancing rule, and take their own container to pick their own. The owner could sit in his vehicle and have a box nearby for the money to go in a slot, though would probably need to be nailed to a post or table! Better than losing a crop. I probably haven't thought this out very well and there will be a reason it can't happen.

I have always wondered why they don’t do this, as every year farmers claim they lose crops as they can’t get the staff to pick them, but maybe these farms are quite remote so no one wants to make the journey? It’s heartbreaking to hear that we have fresh produce that is left rotting away

hspexy I know in the past owners have complained that pickers eat as much as they buy and some folk are dishonest, but surely it is better to get something rather than nothing and no work involved for them. Even if people did eat loads I would think it would balance out by not having to pay wages.

Lynibis lol that’s hilarious - I’m sure there’s no way pickers could eat enough in one go to harm the farmers’ profits! After all, how much fruit or veg does the average modern person even eat? All the natural sugar must be foreign to the bloodstream 😜

hspexy very true and you are right but I did read once that pick your own places are no longer around because the owners got fed up with people eating the profits. I didn't make it up....honest. I used to love fruit picking as a kid and when older did it for wages a couple of times.

It takes me back to a more gentle time as imagined in The Darling Buds of May.

By the way, they are apparently remaking that and Bradley Walsh is to play Pa Larkin!

Lynibis are they really? I hope they don’t spoil it - I didnt really understand it as I was a kid when I used to watch it, but I remember thinking this was how people should live 😊

hspexy I absolutely adored it and David Jason and Pam Ferris were the epitomy of how I imagined the Larkins should be.

Wonder if all this would be necessary if we hadn't made existing European workers feel unwanted here...

I am European, can I go and pick berries? by the way UK is in Europe in the map....but people start to think not, because of Brexit.
