Furloughing - Employers & Employees 12 Need to Know Questions & Answers

In the News

I have just seen this on Martin Lewis's Facebook page and I thought it was amazingly brilliant advice and too good not to share for people and their employers who want some basic facts about furloughing.

It can seem really daunting but these 12 facts and answers that Martin Lewis has provided are a really great resource if it is something you are going through or your employer is considering and clears up a lot of the grey areas.

Not often we quote Martin Lewis on Latest Deals but this is to help people with no competition or financial gain.

This is great advice. Sadly, a friend of mine has been furloughed and his boss has implied that furloughed staff who volunteer to continue to work from home will be looked upon favourably when this is all over. When asked what that meant to the others that obeyed the law he said he was trying to be careful with his words but nobody would suffer. It seems being furloughed will bring it's own stress from an employer and the hmrc if they are found out. Why can't people follow the rules? This boss is not topping up the 80% so no payments from him.

Oh dear, that doesn't sound good angemski Unfortunately, a lot of employers do not know the rules so hopefully this will help people out.

emmabeckz His employer is well aware of the rules but the pressure on his workforce is immense with the threat of redundancies. 😞 Martin Lewis gives sound advice - I'm a fan.

I was expecting to get furlough pay but to be eligible to receive you have to have been employed since 28th February, I started my new job on the 9th March so unfortunately that means I am not eligible for furlough. I am now in a very sticky situation as my partner is self employed so he hasn’t been able to go to work and get money either, so literally £0 coming in! 🤦🏼‍♀️

AliceBell64468 I am sure Martin Lewis was advising (last week) that you can apply to your previous employer to apply for you and your grant, in turn, is paid to them. You contact them and they are able to do this from the gov. Have a go or look on MSE site to confirm that this is the case. The only problem is if you left under a cloud......

Martin Lewis, as ever, talking sense. A man with a mind like a steel trap, and well worth paying attention to.

This clears up most queries, and highlights those who will miss out due to job changing.

I have been furloughed so l am OK at the moment, but l feel really sorry for those who are caught between a rock and a hard place.

This virus is so very far reaching......

summerdaze3 this is what the official GOV website says >>

Employees whose pay varies

If the employee has been employed for 12 months or more, you can claim the highest of either the:

  • same month’s earning from the previous year
  • average monthly earnings for the 2019-2020 tax year
  • If the employee has been employed for less than 12 months, claim for 80% of their average monthly earnings since they started work.
  • If the employee only started in February 2020, work out a pro-rata for their earnings so far, and claim for 80%.

So looks like she will get 80% of what she was on the same months last year or average salary for year 19/20 whichever was higher.

Ann1984 I would tell your employer this as they can't claim just yet but that is what they can claim back for you when the portal opens.

summerdaze3 not a problem you too. My other half could be in the same situation soon as he works shifts and gets enchanted rates for nights and shifts so 80% of his basic would be a huge drop for us so if it comes to it, this could help us too!
