Gardeners Should Scatter Chilli Powder in the Garden to Help Feed the Birds

In the News

Gardeners are urged to scatter chilli powder in their gardens in January for an important reason. It does sound strange, but the method is the perfect way to leave food out for hungry birds - without it being stolen by other animals and in winter, especially when birds and wildlife struggle to find food

Most scavengers that are not of the feathered variety will not eat food that has been sprinkled with chilli powder , yet it has no effect on the birds

So you can confidently put out some seeds or nuts knowing they are going to the correct recipients and not yogi bear

Thanks for the heads up TMum feeds birds in her back garden but every other week there's a lawn massacre and we find a pile of feathers but no bird. This might help.Must admit though I usually get to to the chilli powder first.I often drink cayenne in water..livens you up it does.

telmel That's better than any I could find in a hurry.Thanks."No sense no feeling" my dear dad used to say about me.I was often called a lummock as well.Truth is I am a bit clumsy. We could handle insults a lot easier in those days lol.I loved him to bits.He was both funny and audacious.I inherited his good sense of humour .I think you have more than one funny bone as well.

MelissaLee1 I love humour M , we need more in the present climate

Funnily enough i watched a documentary celebrating the life of Dame Edna Everage last night , He had such a sharp wit and left his guests in fear of what he would say next

He was a fantastic comedian , we need more like him

Probably sounds awful of me but I have a couple of squirrels who are daily visitors but the birds keep pinching the nuts I put out for them!

Lynibis I suppose they all get hungry at some point L, possibly separate a portion for the birds and a portion for the squirrels, and just sprinkle some powder around the bird section so the squirrels don't take it all , although it won't stop the birds taking the squirrels portion , maybe put a bird scarer there to keep them on their own territory 🤔

Never heard of this before, surprised that the birds don’t find it too spicy.

Unfortunately not a good idea when you have five cats. This can make you cat very I’ll with stomach troubles and vomiting plus your cats eyes can get watery and can get a runny nose.

eyeballkerry But i think the whole idea is that cats or other animals like squirrels wont go near the food with chilli in it E , they will smell it a mile away with their heightened senses and not go near it

It's not put down to harm anyone , just to deter them from eating it
