My parents always get me useful gifts. I got a toolbox with some basic items, e.g, screwdrivers, spanners, hammer etc when I got my first house and I still use them 10 years on.

They also got me a wheelbarrow one Christmas which I've still got now.

rararachel my dad gave me a really nice screwdriver with a load of heads and it’s still my favourite. Cost him about a tenner!

rararachel so do my family in general. My mum always asks for new kitchenware and vacuum cleaners for her birthday and Christmas!

mhancomps and for our wedding anniversary recently my parents got us a plant for our garden - a lovely jasmine to grow up an archway. Hopefully will last longer than flowers.

I did have a Miele vacuum cleaner from my parents previously. It lasted 15 years!

rararachel that’s amazing for a vacuum! We just got a robotic one and now I’m hooked. I love watching it go round the house on its adventures!

mhancomps oh wow, brilliant.

In fairness I think our Miele would have lasted longer had the OH not hoovered warm ash up out the log burner and set it on fire 🙄

It depends on the person. Handmade gifts are always personal and special, I think that is the best way to go

I bought someone a collection of coins as a gift, as I knew they were coin collectors themselves. It may not be that useful, but I know it meant a lot to them.

Over several months I bought 6 different vintage silver napkin rings from eBay for a friend's wedding present.

Some rose plants will last for decades, or buy a wisteria - it can easily live for 100 years or more.

I bought my grandparents a chalk board a few years ago and they use that all the time to write reminders and shopping lists on, I don’t think it always has to be something big, and it might be something you don’t expect them to keep and use for years
