If You Could Go to Dinner with One Person Living or Dead, Who Would It Be?

Ask a Question

I'm going to say Mother Teresa. I'd want to hear all about her humanitarian work. If I had to pick someone from showbiz, it would be Cher. Joining her on her tour bus would be so cool! So anyway. If you could go to dinner with one person living or dead, who would you pick?

If I could go to dinner with anyone living or dead I would choose my nan and my auntie who died before I was born. I have heard many stories about them but I would really love to meet them

Dan Jones, historian. Met him briefly when I went to a talk given by him but would love to spend time over dinner talking all things medieval, especially the plantagenets.

You're so right. Dan Jones' books are the most interesting things. You're so lucky to have met him! What was he like?

kfe202 I had intended to queue for him to sign my book but until I got to Winchester did not realise his talk ended barely 30 minutes before my next one started, with Sam Willis and James Daybell, and it was in another building. I hovered near front of queue but he was immersed in his book signing with a queue going round the hall. I took a sneaky pic and then he suddenly stood up, smiled at me and asked if I would take a pic for two lovely ladies he put his arms around. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry lol.

Lynibis That's so cool. So glad that you got your moment with someone you admire. Isn't it strange how the best moments are often the ones we didn't plan to happen?

I can't name the actual person but If I could go to dinner with anyone living or dead, I'd probably choose the one who wasn't dead, Image

Margaret Thatcher.

I didn't like the woman, but I'd like to understand how she came to run the country the way she did and caused so much misery.

And I'd like to see her balls, because she had a bigger pair than I've got.

I think you would need to pick someone that is known to be a good talker. Otherwise, in person your ideal pick may prove to be a little quiet, awkward, overly weird or too self-important. Consequently, I'd go for someone like Roger Moore or Quentin Tarantino 🎬

ACR I don't think you'd avoid overly weird or awkward with Tarantino!

Yes, but with him, you know what to expect. It would be disappointing to meet someone you respect only to find out they aren't very nice or that interesting.

That's a good point. You're so right. Quentin Tarantino would be awesome to have as a dinner guest! Dennab is so right that there would be awkwardness and weirdness in spades probably but that's what would make it interesting. ACR, what one thing would you say to Tarantino if you had the chance?

ACR What a great response. You're so sweet to want to lead with Tarantino's interests and put your own focus on listening. I need to learn from you.

I would have dinner with my grandad, he died before I was born. I would love to ask him what it was like fleeing from his village in the Czech republic so he wasn't forced to fight for the german army in WW2, what my Granny was like when she younger, what my mum was like when she was younger and just get to know him. My mum always told me that he would have adored me, he sounded like a wonderful man and I reckon my mum wouldn't mind another dinner with him either.

Sorry to hear that you never got to meet your grandad. Sounds like he led an interesting life and would have interesting stories. What a nice idea to invite your mum to the dinner!

kfe202 Granny and mum used to tell me stories about him, he sounded amazing. My mum adored him, she was heartbroken when he passed away, he was only 63.
