Are You Going Green This Christmas?
Ask a Question
This means trying to buy less plastic and use recyclable materials.
This could include, buying a second hand gift, regifting a gift or making a gift.
I have decorated tealight candles with paint and glitter and have used card to make a box. I really enjoyed making it and think I have done a fabulous job of it.
Always try to make Christmas green by using brown paper instead of wrapping paper (although have noticed that a lot of places are selling recyclable wrapping paper this year). Also trying to avoid presents with a lot of plastic and/or unnecessary packaging (eg buying share bars of chocolate instead of selection boxes).
lornaae I have been noticing this too which is great. I shop alot from Primark and their bags are reusable for wrapping paper. They did it last year and also this year which is fantastic.
Yes I’m trying to cut down on waste so I’ve just ordered some fabric gift bags which are reusable. Extra bonus is it will save me time and effort on wrapping presents
snoogans888 That's a really good idea! Im sure I have extra fabric laying around somewhere. Im not good at wrapping either so I will make use of this idea. Thank you for suggesting it!
Justlooking2 I was going to make my own but I’ve not learned how to use my sewing machine yet! I do have an old pillow case which I’m going to make into a stocking/sack for my 3 yr old (she won’t care how shoddy my sewing skills are )
snoogans888 At that age they don't criticize she will definitely be thankful for it, that's for sure.
Justshopping please do not ask for likes on comments it goes against our guidelines and can result in your post being removed. Thank you
Im trying to be greener so this year I will use recyclable brown wrapping paper tied with ribbon. Also I’m trying to cut down on gifting but this suggestion hasn’t been well received.
Pjran If you shop from primark, their bags are brown paper and reusable. You can reused it to wrap your present which also comes with a tag.
Justlooking2 thanks I didn’t know that. Unfortunately we don’t live near a primary so wouldn’t be ethical driving all that way.
Pjran That's true, but if you have any friends or family that live near a primark and shop from there. You can let them know
Pjran I suggested to my fiancé to only buy for his niece and nephew rather than his whole family but he didn’t like that idea. His sister is super fussy and she gives us a list of what to buy for her so seems pointless to me!
snoogans888 really? Wow. How can someone write a wishlist. That's quite selfish. I think her present time should be overand I think your right and I absolutely agree with you. Your husband should focus on the kids, his niece and nephew.
All of our decorations this year are 2nd hand from my mum. It's our first Christmas in our new house, so it will be even more special with the decorations from when I was young. We always use gift bags in our house, use the front of old Christmas cards as gift tags, using recyclable wrapping paper, only buying the food that we really need and only getting presents that we know the recipient will actually use.
I buy 2nd hand items throughout the year and be as green as I can afford to be, so I try to continue this at Christmas.
MrsCraig This sounds amazing. I love the fact that you are using second hand decorations from your mum. It will be special for you as well as the children and you create more memories. In our house, we always reuse the gift bags because there's no point of buying more, when the bag is in good condition.
Its great for making things of your own re using and up cycling but it is a shame many toy companies still use a hell of a lot of plastic, some more than even needed
wonderingsoul yes, and they should stop using plastic. In my opinion I think they should start fixing the toys that are not working and reselling those or making toys but without the use of plastic.
I’ve been wrapping gifts with newspapers, as I can’t stand spending money on gift wrapping for it all to be torn to shreds and binned within seconds
hspexy That's a brilliant idea! Me neither I can't stand it. First of all, you spend money and time for it to he wrapped. Second, it's ripped open and thrown in the bin. A complete waste of time and money.
I am definitely going green this year as I am not buying presents so won’t be wrapping up anything and not purchasing any Christmas decorations
eyeballkerry Thats good. There's other ways of celebrating. For example, making food. Everyone loves food.
