Do I Need To Leave The Door Open When Using The Grill?

Sorry if it sounds a stupid question but I have been using the grill years with the door open and I am reading that it may not be necessary. Can someone expert in grills advise?
My oven is an old one and ive always had to leave the door open as per the instructions, sorry but cant remember why
I am not expert but I always leave the door open if I am grilling something. I have a double oven but never use the top one for actual cooking only grilling.

If it's OK to grill with the door closed it saves a lot of energy.
GSM I always grill with door open, grilling is normally quick and you need to see how quickly it turns colour. I seem to remember years ago being told to leave door open otherwise the rubber seals would be damaged.
