Growing Own Fruit and Veg

Ask a Question

Has anyone managed to grow anything in lockdown. I already have fruit trees in my garden which are doing well and my tomato plants are looking strong and healthy. I grow different things each year and usually get good results. Has anyone grown something for the first time this year?

I planted all my flower seeds At the start of lockdown but to be honest there not doing very well, probably because they are in the summer house. Green house and the slabs have finally arrived and going up next week.I’ve also planted strawberries, peas and kale which are doing well, the peppers not so good and tomato plants which are also looking strong. I’m going to plant lettuce next week and spring onions so fingers crossed. Charlie dimmick wont have a look in 😭😭😭😭😭

I don't have a garden but today I went to Asda and was looking at the Parsley plants and considered to get a small wooden pallet rebuilt to accommodate a bunch of plants and stuff and my partner reminded me that it will probably attract a lot of bugs. I quit the idea right there ahah

We got some free seedling kits from M&S and so far the beets, chillies, peppers and basil look like they are thriving. The micro cress died a couple of weeks ago. We’ve just germinated and planted some cheery seeds, so fingers crossed

Oh yes, along with our apple, pear & plum trees I usually try and do the tomatoes, lettuce, radish, rhubarb, cucumbers and beans & last year I added onions, marrows & leeks, which were all quite successful. Last years spring onions were a failure but I am trying them again and they are emerging through the soil so I shall keep my eye on them. πŸ‘€

This year I have also dabbled with peppers, potatoes, courgettes, cabbage, parsnips, swedes and beetroot. Some of them were plug plants bought on the internet and some from seed. I have some sprouts waiting to be planted - when my new net/cover arrives (to keep the pigeons off). All seem to be coming along nicely. Looking at what I've just written I think I have a lot to do but we'll just take it day by day - you will have to ask for an update later in the season...🐞

Well done you on all that planting and tendering. Just keep focused on the time when you're sitting down and eating the fruits of your labour (literally). It makes it all worth it.

dawarwick That's exactly what you have to do. You can't compare fruit/veg that you've grown yourself with those bought from the shops. πŸ… πŸ₯’ 🌢️ πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ 🍎 🍐 🐞

I'm pretty good at growing chives and mint, but not much else.

I have 2 cherry trees and we have a bumper harvest of 3 cherries this year. I think that the birds have pecked the rest.

I planted some gutter strawberries... strawberry plants growing in a u-shaped piece of old guttering. I was a tad apprehensive as thought they soil wouldn't be deep enough but from five plants I have around 20-25 developing strawberries I can see with more flowers on the way. I love thrifty ideas.

Watch out for the birds! They like them too. πŸ“ 🐞

I'm trying Roquito pearl peppers and dwarf San Marzano tomatoes this year. Neither will take up too much room so it'll be nice if they give up some fruit. I rooted some Basil from a food delivery in March and now have three large, bushy pots full.

I bought a strawberry plant last year and didn't have much luck with it but have some growing well now!
