Do Hairdressers Charge More for Longer Hair??

Ask a Question

The reason I ask this is because I was always under the impression that if you have longer hair then you would be charged more at the hairdressers. Mine is very long and and my work colleague's is a shoulder length bob. To have hers dyed, washed and blow dry with a trim is cheaper than what my hairdresser charged me but my work colleague says it doesn't matter if it's long or short, they charge the same. Is this true?? Just intrigued!

It possibly depends on the hairdresser. It could cost more as it takes longer to cut and style long hair than shorter hair. I've never really thought about it, I've always just paid the price.

I thought they would charge the same amount as the amount of work is probably fairly similar unless you were having a complete restyle. I've found that prices vary wildly at different places though.

Yes, I've found salon prices vary, but they should all charge the same no matter how long your hair is. Maybe the different prices was set a long time ago and now it's changed?? I think we need the assistance of a hairdresser on here!

It depends on the salon. Some charge the same price but it depends on what you have done. Say if your having your hair dyed and you have very short hair then you would only need 1/4 tube of colour, 5-10 mins to apply the dye, then once developed it could be washed, cut and dried in 45 mins. So very little product and only 1 hour of the stylists time (not counting just sitting developing).

Someone with long hair having the same colour - 1 whole tube (4 times the product) if not more, 30-45 mins to apply (may even use 2 people to apply), then it take 2-3 times longer if not more to wash and blow dry and slightly longer to cut. So really the difference between short and long hair for some treatments could be 4x the amount of product used and stylists time. When i worked in a salon we had a price list for short/medium/long hair.

I thought this might be the case where they charge more for longer hair, it does make sense in what you're saying.

My hairdressers has 2 sections: the main cut, style and colour side and then a quick sit and wait side. On the wait side they have a price list that has 3 different prices dependent on length of hair. Only a couple of pounds but definitely different. On the full style side it's the same price regardless of length but more expensive just due to the nature of ask and time taken.

It depends where you go, but most high street salons will have standardised prices. The more ‘boutique’ the salon looks, the more likely they’re going to make the charges up as they go along

My hairdresser charges more for long hair. She has set prices for short, medium, long with only a couple pounds difference. Pretty sure it just depends where you go tho.

What a rip off. My mum cuts my hair and its past my waist so how much would they want to charge me for a trim? It's parted in the middle, all one length with a fringe, so how can any one justify more for a trim when its a straight cut 1 inch across the bottom? that's why I don't go to hairdressers.

Hey, you have the same style as me! I hate dying it myself though due to the long length can make a mess sometimes, though I do do it sometimes to keep the costs down.
