Sundays Used To Be So Different

Ask a Question

I remember the old days, shops were closed, people went to church and families sat down for Sunday dinner. Do you have memories and how has it changed for you?

I don't know how old you are eyeballkerry but I remember when, not only did shops close on Sundays, but Saturday and Wednesday afternoons too! Although not all families went to church a lot of kids went to Sunday school and while mum cooked the Sunday roast dad would be gardening, doing a bit of DIY or cleaning the car.

The afternoon would be visiting relatives or chilling on the sofa in front of the box, after everyone helped with the washing up of course.

Modern families don't know what they are missing lol.

I remember pretty much the same when I was a kid, we always used to have a traditional roast dinner, followed by a Sunday Tea, which consisted of tinned fruit, trifle if we were lucky sandwiches usually potted paste, possibly corned beef or luncheon meat, and homemade sausage rolls & pastie, there was always a large homemade cake also on the table. Sunday evening was bath night and watching the telly, which was black & white .

I am in my late twenties and even I can see the difference in Sunday’s. I used to look forward to my Sunday roast and watching TV with my parents but times have changed a lot!

I used to love a sunday all morning would smell the roast cooking. Never went to church not a believer in god shop were closed it was family time how things have changed. Only thing that annoyed me was when mum would shout upstairs foods done but when you get down she would be still doing the gravy 😂

All I remember is having Sunday lunch (my mother wasn't the best cook) and visiting my grandparents every month.

No Sky, no footy on the box.

Best thing was me and a tape recorder, the Top 40 and the chart countdown.

Personally, I would prefer if Sundays were just like Saturdays. I dislike supermarkets and other businesses closing earlier on Sundays. If people want to go to church and/or have a Sunday roast then they still can.
