Hardys Wine Owner Warns of Christmas Shortage Risk

Ask a Question

I keep on seeing these headlines about Christmas shortages, do you think this is just scaremongering, or a reason for price rises ?

I won't worry if there's a shortage of Hardys because it is horrible.

But if there's a shortage of wine in general and I can't get any, I will get the right hump.

I'm not ready to graduate onto spirits quite yet.

I've no interest in wine always seems like a waste of good grapes to me but I feel the Christmas shortages will affect a wider range of products than just wine but these shortages won't affect all products so I'm sure people will be able to work around it. Some items will increase in price though which means inflation.

I buy when I see offers at 25% off 6 bottles so I think it’s scaremongering why would the supermarkets run these deals if they can not get stock?

You could always go back to making your own like i did years ago

I used to buy the kits and make my own wine and beers

I even made saki , which went down a treat with my mother in law at the time

I was suddenly her favourite son in law for some reason

telmel I've never tried sake, its on my list to try at some point. I seem to like anything rice related so maybe I would enjoy it. Someone ought to do a British sake wine even if using imported rice as it looks like a difficult thing to get over here at a decent price and rice is cheap as chips.

BonzoBanana It was a long time ago B, but i remember it wasnt too difficult to , i remember i added sultanas as per the recipe as well as rice and various other ingredients

It was potent but kept the in law quiet

I used to make the beers in a large plastic barrel with a screw top and a valve to fit a small gas cylinder on to carbonate it and give the beer a head

I had a party once and invited friends around to try all i had made, the pale ale i brewed was their favourite

telmel Stick a video on youtube how to make Sake or maybe you can recommend one already there. My brother many years ago used to brew his own beer. I remember the large white bucket and various accessories. It was goddamn awful if I remember rightly and he soon stopped. Very yeasty, it seemed like more yeast than beer. Imagine having a pint glass and just filling it with the foam from this. I guess too much sugar or yeast or something was where he went wrong. It wasn't all bad but of course you only remember the worst that was brewed especially as it was so long ago.

I must have been reading your mind B, i was looking for a recipe for you

This is the closest to mine, dont forget the yeast and you must leave it in a warm place to ferment, i used to put my beers and wines in the containers in the airing cupboard where the hot water tank was

I will carry on looking to see if there are some with written instructions also

Just found these B, hope one is suitable

Heres one without the raisins B, it says simple to make in a few hours ??

And another

and finally one more

When I was in Lidl and Aldi yesterday they both has freezers full of Christmas food. I didn't buy any, we will eat what is available when I go to get Christmas food. I'm not worried if there is a wine shortage as I don't drink.

If the news continues to speculate about food shortages there will soon by panic buying as with the petrol and it will become a self fulfilling prophecy!

Selfishly I couldn't care less if there is a shortage of any alcohol as I don't drink. And maybe there will be many families who are regular victims of domestic abuse who will be pleased too.

I agree with you L, i rarely drink now unlike when i was younger

Its too readily available, and unlike smoking is encouraged by the government due to tax revenue , plus some are probably big drinkers themselves ,especially spirits, hence the reluctance to tax it too high

I would be worrying more about a shortage of food

I like the odd glass of wine, normally at the weekend with a meal. But take on board your comments.

It was the 1st mention of shortages, subsequently seen articles about toys, turkeys ..

Really can't see there being a shortage of Alcohol this Christmas, such a ready supply from all corners of the world, and a massive money spinner for the big stores and brewery chains at Christmas . Maybe certain brands will be missing, but I'm sure there will be alternatives available .

A lot of these stories only serve to drive sales of overpriced highly taxed items. If I was in charge of a near bankrupt country wanting to make its mid year figures look less grim I might encourage this behaviour.

There will be some shortages but it will depend on where you are and not all products will be short. Its not scaremongering - the shortages are there for all to see. This has been going on for some time a- and there are new rules still to be applied to incoming goods from the EU which wont help either. Im not too worried about alcohol as there are plenty of choices so even if I cant get what I want - I will get something! Already have quite few bottles put back for Christmas as I have been buying extra over the last few weeks
