Harrods is Opening in Westfield London
In the News
Wow, just read that Harrods is opening in Westfield London, Shepherds Bush, in the old Debenhams site.
Knew that Debenhams branch was closing but never ever expected Harrods to take over. Thought it would be more suited to the expensive end of Westfields.
Harrods: it’s a bastion of all things glam and gaudy, it’s a byword for luxury, a palace of possibility for princes and their spend-thrift mistresses. What it isn’t is an unit in an out-of-town shopping mall. Or at least, it wasn’t until just now when they announced a branch is opening in Westfield. Which is… a bit weird.
Tbh I also thought it was an unusual decision but the idea is to sell off everything that they can't sell in Knightsbridge. (us peasants get to have a rummage in the tycoons' leavings ) I wondered if the owner knew something we didn't - re-development of the area with big brand names moving in but the site is limited. I think it's going to be known as Harrods Outlet.
Suppose times are hard for even them. Still think poor choice of location in Westfields. You’re probably right angemski, in that inferior goods will be sold there, for us plebs to buy
Wow didn’t realise debenhams had closed permanently, although I knew it wasn’t very busy. I can’t see Harrods being any busier, although there are rich enough people in the area, usually tourists, who would shop there
Was shocked that one was closing too hspexy, but think better location in Westfields would have helped. Times must be hard if they didn’t wait for site in expensive end. Must have negotiated a great price
ivenailedit yes there’s probably not much space on the fancy end, as House of Fraser isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Harrods is just going to be a fancy souvenir shop. I suppose they’ve got the money to do it up
hspexy spot on. Think House of Fraser is not the same since taken over, gone downhill. Shame that can’t swap sites with Harrods spot
ivenailedit That's because Mike Ashley turns everything he touches into ****. The problem is that **** is so cheap, people buy it, a bit like Primark.
ivenailedit Lol we can thank Mike Ashley for that. It’s now a tatty, tatty shop, a replica of sports direct but without the cheap prices
TheChimp With Dyson, it was about the fight to realise an idea back when he started. The story of him being rejected by every vacuum manufacturer, building countless prototypes and finally succeeding under his own steam is fascinating. He's sold out and I don't mean the stock levels of his products!
Read articles like this and it starts to become clear why Harrods may branch out to the commoners:

Also, didn't Harrods previously own House of Fraser? They've also had other shops in the past under different names.
Dennab, cannot read as not subscribed. Found this: The department store was acquired by House of Fraser in 1959, which in turn was purchased by the Fayed brothers in 1985. This is a joke - The Harrods motto is Omnia Omnibus Ubique, which is Latin for "all things for all people, everywhere".
This may just be a temporary measure. The new location is an outlet store designed to sell discounted items that they were unable to sell as a result of the lockdown. They also want to reduce the number of people visiting the Knightsbridge store due to COVID-19. Westfield offers a large space that will enable them to accommodate a lot of customers while still observing social distancing measures. They already have additional shops at Gatwick and Heathrow airports that sell Harrods branded products for departing tourists. But, any further expansion - which in the current climate would seem unlikely - would risk diluting the appeal of the brand - https://www.cityam.com/harrods-to-open-westfield-outlet-shop-to-ease-pressure-on-knightsbridge-store/
Good article ACR, as makes absolute sense. Wealthy people cannot be doing with buying outdated stock. This is a joke - The Harrods motto is Omnia Omnibus Ubique, which is Latin for "all things for all people, everywhere".
That's great considering a lot of people lost their jobs, but I always found them overpriced. To be fair, they do sell high end products, though an iPhone case for like £300?!
PhilipMarc, that’s the idea to appeal to wealthy clientele. Good point at least lots of employment & will bring more shoppers to Westfields. As said above this is a joke - The Harrods motto is Omnia Omnibus Ubique, which is Latin for "all things for all people, everywhere".
it will no doubt be filled with the tourist souvenirs you find on one of the floors in their flagship store. They seem to be in most airports these days as well
Also fashion items that are now out of season, which the wealthy can’t be seen dead in. Will definitely be visiting to nose around ptenn00
Hopefully if they are opening an outlet store the cost of items will be more affordable for the people in the area as Harrods is v expensive and times are even tougher for some at present in terms of money.
Good point LeighReidAtanas, as they need to recoup some of the losses during lockdown. Westfield London is by Holland Park etc & they are loaded
