Hedgehogs
Ask a Question
Does anyone love hedgehogs as much as me?
I have wild ones living in my garden.
We have had hedgehogs coming into our garden for quite a few years now, absolutely love them to bits and leave food and water out for them every night. One of the hogs that we named Henry must have been Henrietta as we had 5 baby hogs about 6 weeks ago, as they were too much underweight to survive the winter we have housed them in our garage, all are putting on weight great but still not heavy enough to be put outside yet.
Attached a picture of "Lemon", as we have names for all of them
TiaTia oh she is just gorgeous....i would put pictures up but i still havent mastered it. I have had them living in my garden for years and have had many hoglets running about β€.
I didnt realise that the adults still hibernate even if they have had a late litter sept/oct and let the hoglets fend for themselves....my grandson called our little tiddler Poe....my daughters dog barks like mad at him....wagging his tail.
Nice to talk to someone else about them.
ellenmcmurchie They are absolutely beautiful creatures but the babies need to be over 580 grams to survive the winter. We also have a little camera set up so can watch what they get up to through the night.
TiaTia what a great idea having a camera on them at night....
My garden used to be open ....but a number of years ago i had a 6ft fence build around it. So at one of the gates i cut a hole init so they can come and go. Also they are a little more protected when they are init.
ellenmcmurchie We also have cut a hole the size of a CD in our gate and have a sign "Hedgehog Highway" above it. It's also a good idea that your neighbors know you have hedgehogs as they could also cut a hole in their fence or gate so the hogs can roam freely around.
We buy their food from Wilkinson's...Mr Johnson's Hedgehog food. They are also quite partial to kitten Chicken and Turkey pate food.
We dont have Wilkinsons here...i buy Webbox hoggie food....you can get that in Morrisons..i do know Pets at Home also sell wet food and dry food.....my spiky little friends love apples.
You are so lucky to have them visit your garden, they are on the decline. Ive only ever seen one in my garden
KirstyW maybe putting a saucer of water out and some cat biscuits or dog....as long as they are not fish based...they are ok. Big supermarkets now sell hedgehog food. they are on the decline....its so sad.
ellenmcmurchie I had no idea supermarkets sold hedgehog food. Id like to do that, but i don't own the property and i house share, but i might see what I can do
KirstyW oh i see...house share....you have nothing to lose having a look round the garden to see if little spiky friends can get in and out the garden....if its enclosed they cant visit.
ellenmcmurchie i think there is a gap between mine and neighbours garden. Will have a look around, thanks.
My mum feeds them in her garden (as well as foxes, birds, stray cats) when I lived there we had a 7 foot fence put in as my dog was crossed with kangaroo and regularly escaped so the fence was a foot deep too. We kept getting hedgehogs (my dog had a special bark he used for hedgehogs) and we couldn't figure out how they were getting in, until we watched them one night, they scaled the fence easily, never realised they climbed till then. Just wish it had been in the days when phones had cameras
Dilligaf wow...hedgehogaroo's thats so funny....they are very comical. I think me and your mum might be related....i feed and furry friends....i would love to see foxes xxxx
ellenmcmurchie she spends more money on the animals than anything else, don't blame her though
I have hand reared a good few and for christmas I bought mum a hedgehog hotel for the garden as she is wildlife crazy. Recently in all the bad weather I found a youngster freezing to death so in my down insulated jacket he went - heated and fed he was soon snoring and was released a few days later- one happy hog!
OneeyedRaven what a brilliant gift....thsts so thoughtful. ......i think this little spiky darling is feeling much better lol
Ive never seen one in the wild, although Ive been told there have been sightings of them in the garden in the past. Same goes for rabbits in the marshes near me, although I did spot one last year
We rarely see a hedgehog waddle about, but we do see a lot of badgers, foxes and muntjac deer walking up and down the road
