Hedgehogs
Ask a Question
I couldn't believe my eyes last night when I was lucky enough to spot a hedgehog on our patio. We live next to fields and see plenty of badgers and foxes but not one hedgehog in over 3 years. As a child we saw them daily. I knew their numbers had decreased but was shocked to read that they have declined in numbers from approx 36 million to less than a million since I was young. I would like to know who has them in their gardens and what do you do to encourage them?
I found one under my car on our driveway a few years ago. It was alive, but a cat was hanging around watching it so i tried to feed it and move it but was scared, so scared the cat away and off it went. But i lived on a street and no proper garden so thought it was a bit odd how it got there. First time ive ever seen one
KirstyWaddell I'm glad you got to see one and scared the cat away. They are such beautiful creatures. I hadn't realised quite how bad the situation with them is. I grew up in London but saw loads as a child.
The last hedgehog I saw was in Oxfordshire around 10 years ago and it didn't look very well. It's terrible that numbers have dropped by such a large amount
I have never seen one in the wild, although there are supposed to be some in our local parks, but their numbers are declining at a fast rate. There’s definitely none in the garden as we have cats prowling
I remember seeing once in a backyard in London some 10 years ago. It looked kinda cutesy and adorable but also heard that they're tasty when grilled. lol
I saw 3 of them walking through my back garden a couple years ago, a big one and 2 little ones. Fascinating. I wonder where they went from there, never saw them again
It is so wonderful to see them when they're thriving. I often see them in our garden and it is always such a pleasure! I would definitely recommend leaving a little food out to help them get enough food and a hedgehog house to encourage them!
SaverDeals they are beautiful little creatures aren't they. I have put a little bit of cat food out and was thinking about a hedgehog house. You are so lucky to have regular visits. Which area do you live in?
There was one on my doorstep a few months back my grandson was real please and getting excited about it he wanted to touch it he’s only 14 months old and he didn’t understand why he couldn’t as he is always touching the dog it was the first time he had seen a hedgehog
