How Can We Help the Arts through This Pandemic

In the News

Hi!

I love the arts and am worried that everything is going to go under such as theatres, galleries, exhibits, etc.

Apart from buying tickets to support these businesses, can anyone recommend ways in which to help? I don't want a world without musicals!!!

Thanks

I'm pretty much a philistine and not really arty but do enjoy visiting art galleries with historic paintings and also visiting and viewing old buildings but the idea of going to see a show is an absolute nightmare for me, I would pay to get out. Not my thing at all. It's hard to know what to do to keep the industry going because will the way people socialise change for good. Maybe people just won't risk such shows anymore or in such reduced numbers it will never be sustainable. It's a huge revenue stream for the UK with many tourists watching such shows but perhaps they won't in the future. Need to find a way of mothballing so it can come back if demand picks up again.

Your post made me wonder, have you ever been to a West End show? Both my sons (in their 40s) were absolutely against going until I pointed out tickets at less than half price during the winter and we got 7 to see Phantom. They both really enjoyed it to the extent that one wants to go again as soon as we are able and often plays the music in his car. He has also watched 2 versions of the film!

I consider myself quite an arty person but not actual art. I can't think of anything more boring than looking at pictures on a wall lol.

Lynibis I've never been to a west end show but to be honest I'll fight like a maniac to make sure that doesn't happen in the future if i have to. It's just not my thing at all. I'm not into portrait pictures but must admit I do enjoy historic landscape paintings I can find them quite moving because they make you think about the different time they were painted. Also I don't like live music much because I prefer professionally edited and equalised music played through high quality headphones or speakers. I have listened to live music and the sound quality isn't as good and the atmosphere doesn't make up for it to me. Ultimately there are so many other things I enjoy or would enjoy more. I have to say I do like 'Oliver' the musical film a lot but most musicals, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire type movies plus films like Sound of Music, Grease etc I detest and can't bear to watch. I only really like Oliver because of the decent story and fantastic sets where as most musicals focus more on the music than the actual story.

Don't get me wrong though I don't want to see the industry disappear it seems one of the rare success stories of our economy of recent years and hope it returns to its former glory. I would only say we have to be careful how much money we put in protecting it because it maybe it can never be as popular in the future as it once was.

BonzoBanana Well far be it from me to try to persuade you lol, but if you like Oliver then I reckon you probably would like Phantom and Les Miserables. I must admit I am not rushing to see many of the others and like you, Grease et al are not my cup of tea at all.

I hate live music in clubs and pubs, in fact I won't go but musicals usually have highly qualified professionals and it is amazing watching them in the 'pit'. The atmosphere in a theatre, to me, is amazing too. I saw Oliver many times when young as my cousin was in the stage musical. She took me out with the artful dodger and Oliver for a trip on a boating place in London, can't remember where.

You may know from my posts that I love history with a passion so therefore love going round castles, old buildings, abbeys, cathedrals etc and if I could have one more trip abroad would love to see the Colosseum in Rome, Gladiator is one of my favourite films.

  • Purchase merchandise from artists, whether it be paintings, music, film rentals
  • Leave positive reviews for museums etc that you've been to
  • Attend an online exhibit (a lot of museums/zoos etc have been doing these)
  • Like artists social media pages
