Help Gas Certificate

Ask a Question

Hi, a tricky situation here and I wonder if someone is able to help. I had works carried out in my kitchen and we didn't finish in good terms with the builder basically job is unfinished and we didn't pay the remaining money. The problem is that we have to do many things ourselves including gas and electric certificate so Building Control can approve the works carried out. The builder won't provide the certificates and we don't have any contact with electrician and plumber. What is the best thing to do? Can someone else signed off a work done by someone else?

They won’t sign off on someone else’s work since that would be illegal. If something goes wrong it makes them and their company liable for everything that happened even though they didn’t fit it. You’ll likely need to have a new gas safe registered person come in and refit anything that was fitted without the certificates being provided.

On another note. Is your builder registered with the guild of works or like wise ? I’d be looking to report them for negligent behaviour and dangerous trading so forth. Why won’t thé builder do it ? That’s alarm bells. If he has any integrity and want for reputation he wouldn’t deny you anything and rectify the job.

GSM Put your builders details in here https://www.nhbc.co.uk/homeowners/check-the-register and with a bit of luck he'll be Registered. You could also try and make contact with the electrician and plumber, who hopefully are also registered and have up to-date certificates. The plumber must also be a Gas Safe Registered Engineer, if not you need one.

lilyflower I contacted them both and not reply. I don't know if they are registered either and that really worries me. The company name of the builder is not in that page either.

A gas safe engineer should be able to check the work done and issue a certificate without redoing it , providing any pipes are accessible and not hidden (after all they issue them for older houses where they haven't repiped the whole house ) .

Best to consult a gas safe engineer they will know what extra work is required ( remember they charge about £70 - £100 to plug in and certify a new gas cooker which is just a push and twist fit connection ).
