What Historical Attitudes and Customs Would You like to See Nowadays
Other
I know I am going to be in for huge disagreement on this subject because here are a few I would like to retain or bring back.
Common courtesy
More modest attire
Discipline in schools
Children not butting in on adult conversation
PDA's kept more discreet
I can think of loads more but let's hear yours if you have any
Well supposedly we have more freedom of speech than at any other time but you wouldn't believe it the way we keep being gagged by snowflakes.
Very true MrsCraig and for the same reason I feel teachers should not permit pupils to call them by their first name. I personally don't like very young people calling me by my first name, call centre staff, retailers etc. However if they ask if it is ok I always say it is with a smile, it just shows respect.
Lynibis I have never let the pupils call me by my first name. None of my teacher friends let pupils call them by their first name. My husband has pupils who left the school years ago and they still call him Mr M! I still call my teachers from secondary school Mr/Mrs! My dad plays golf with my old computing teacher and I still call him Mr C!
An attitude where you accepted everything doesn't come straight away. More than one friend have purchased property and want everything now. No concept of waiting, saving money.
Can we return to a time where there was no such thing as an 'influencer'.
Yes, it is a wonderful feeling to wait and save until you can afford to buy what you need/want. Debt is a curse and much of the time totally unnecessary.
Lynibis it really bugs me people moaning they don't have nice holidays like I do, how we are affording house renovations, quality items etc when they have their daily Costa coffee, car on lease, sofa from DFS on the tick and various monthly subscriptions and new clothes. We save hard and would rather put £3 towards a holiday or
quality piece of furniture than a coffee ...
We moved into our house with pretty much everything from Freecycle something a lot of friends seem horrified by....
That's a wonderful list Lynibis but how about the opposite way round?
I would like to go back to a world without mobile phones and, dare I say it, computers. I can do without CGI in films too. I think that the world has become far too technical and we are probably heading for a fall; imagine if the power fails, hardly anything in the home will work. We are becoming too reliant on Alexa's and so on (we don't have one) to my mind it's ripe for an 'irobot' situation?
Even though I am getting on I am an advocate of mobile phones and computers as they have done more good than bad. I couldn't do my job without either and sure many others are the same. But I do think we could do without social media and be the better for it. However, genie is out of the bottle on that one and it will only get worse. I can see a day when all we will do is lounge in a recliner with everything at our fingertips, interaction with other humans greatly reduced and not even any shops, goods will be robotically delivered. We will probably have dehydrated food to which water is added to miraculously make a pizza, or whatever, and if that sounds far fetched I still can't get my head around 3D printers!
Lynibis You are right - there is no going back. I don't personally do any social media but do get dismayed when people try and film everything, everywhere just in case they capture something 'good'!
Do you remember this song by Zager & Evans? Very appropriate...
tumblespots yes I do remember it, very appropriate! I have no social media apart from LD and am utterly convinced it is the cause of so much of today's 'mental health issues'.
tumblespots Can i just ask why you want to go back to previous times? i personally think the technology advances have been better for the world.
Getsome Partly because I don't like change much but mostly because the more people have computers and gadgets to do the thinking for them, the less they think for themselves ergo the more they blame others for not being told things for example; the weather forecasters now tell you that you need to be careful because of ice. When they don't tell you you will say it's their fault, yes, they told you there was ice, but they didn't tell you to be careful. The blame game - when no-one takes responsibility for making their own decisions.
tumblespots But we have to change and accept change because without we wouldn't move forward and be stuck. I agree people should be making there own decisions but i disagree with technology not advancing, i believe it should be and keep advancing. Do things out in the world and in space not make you curious? Without technology we would have limited knowledge.
tumblespots Disagree with what? that we have to change? technology shouldn't advance? or all of it?
Getsome The knowledge is out there, we don't have to have computers to access information. If that was so we would never have made any advances before computers were invented. Books are a great source of knowledge and I would rather be reading a book than looking at a computer screen all day. Computers also stop people from talking to each other, everyone is in their own little world.
tumblespots Im not saying books arent a get source of knowledge but you can learn a lot more from computers and a lot quicker. If we didn't have computers then a lot of people products available today would not, like this forum.
Getsome But we don't know each other. We are only connected through cyberspace so really we are still alone, there is not true companionship on the internet unless you knew the other person beforehand.
tumblespots No what im saying is without computers and technology then we wouldnt have some of the things you use today. Do you own a tv, microwave, cooker, phone, computer, car, fridge, freezer etc
Getsome Would you rather I camped in a field - because I don't think the council would like that, as I wouldn't pay the exorbitant rates they charge! My phone is the most basic you can get - it phones & texts, I hardly ever use it and would rather not have one at all!
tumblespots Up to you if you want to camp in a field. Dont matter if you your phone is basic or latest model its still technology and without technology we dont have mobiles. If you dont agree with technology advancing then why dont you give up your mobile?
Getsome I actually never wanted the damn thing in the first place - Mr Tumblespots insists I have it in case I ever break down! How anyone ever broke down and was rescued in the past is obviously a mystery....
tumblespots I have to admit I can't agree with you on this one lol. I can remember breaking down several times prior to mobile phones and the misery of hanging around for hours with 2 small children while hubby has to walk miles to a phone box to get a rescue vehicle out, nearly always pouring with rain!
I think they are invaluable for teens out socialising so parents can keep tabs.
I can go on and on as I remember the misery of having to go to a phone box and it can be the difference between life and death in an emergency.
Lynibis I always thought that before mobile phones there were telephone boxes almost everywhere. I can agree though that with 2 children in tow finding and using one must have been a fraught time, and don't you always break down in the rain!
I suppose my biggest beef with mobile phones is that people constantly use them to either film other people (unbeknownst to them) so privacy in normal life has disappeared or to take pouting selfies (which I hate).
tumblespots I certainly agree with you there! We always broke down on motorways lol, phones far and few between
I must admit that my motive in starting this thread was to glean what people felt about the attitudes, manners, customs of the past. However, as we have moved on to technology the one thing I would not miss and would want to disinvent (made up word) would be air travel. I hate planes and will never set foot on one again. They have carried disease, dropped bombs on countless people and caused lots of heartbreak. Ships are enough and we can keep in touch with skype, zoom and conference calls.
I agree with that, planes can go, especially in light of the recent pandemic (disease transference). It wouldn't have spread so quickly or so far if it hadn't been for air travel.
One thing i would miss is air travel as i want to see the world and unfortunately i wouldnt be able to see much of the world if it was only by ship.
Getsome I realise my comment is total anathema to most and obviously it is very personal to me. I have been lucky enough to see a lot of the world by air travel so shouldn't begrudge it to others. But they are so environmentally bad and as I said, used for warfare.
Don't decry travel by ship. I have been on an amazing Nile cruise, a sea cruise that took in places like Damascas in Syria, Egypt and other places and another 14 day cruise stopping at a different med island every day. So leisurely and hassle free.
Lynibis I would use a ship to see the world but i wouldnt have the time as i need to work to get the money to travel and i couldnt see my work place giving most of the year to go on holiday
